Trevor had always been a serious, reserved man.
Even on the best of days, he rarely smiled. Romance wasn’t exactly his territory, and a soft, affectionate tone was even more out of character for him.
So when Ryan heard that voice through the phone, he froze.
It was Trevor.
And Trevor sounded anything but himself.
The words hit Ryan like a punch to the ears.
Then the call abruptly ended.
Ryan stared at his phone for a moment, his jaw tightening. He could almost picture what was happening on the other end.
A dark, unreadable look crossed his face.
Slowly, he turned toward the doorway.
It was as though he could see straight through the wall to the room across the hall.
*****
Rose was just as surprised.
She’d assumed she’d have the room to herself that evening. She certainly hadn’t expected to swipe her key card and find Trevor already there.
He’d apparently finished his online meeting and was stretched out on the sofa, eyes closed, his brow drawn into a deep frown as he drifted in and out of sleep.
Rose immediately felt awkward.
She had a pretty good idea someone had arranged this without bothering to tell her.
Her first thought was to wake Trevor and send him back to his own room.
But as she stepped closer, she noticed how flushed his face was.
Heat radiated from him.
Rose stopped.
She didn’t dare touch him.
Instead, she set her phone down, went into the bathroom, soaked a washcloth in cold water, and brought it back. She figured she’d at least cool his face down and see whether he had a fever.
But when she came out—
Trevor was awake, answering her phone.
Rose had been so distracted by her call with Ryan that she hadn’t noticed him sit up.
Now he was watching her.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, his usually controlled expression strangely tense. There was something in his eyes that made Rose’s steps falter.
His gaze was intense.
Too intense.
It felt as though someone had turned a match inside him and set everything ablaze.
Rose suddenly felt hot under his stare.
Then Trevor got to his feet.
He took a step toward her, his breathing uneven.
"Rose..."
His voice was rough.
"I want you."
Rose froze.
For a second, she couldn’t process what she’d just heard.
Then she instinctively ended the call with Ryan.
She turned toward Trevor and took a step back.
"Trevor?"
He gave a small nod.
His eyes never left her.
Whatever he’d been holding back seemed to have completely broken loose. He swallowed hard as he watched her.
"You always call me Trevor," he murmured. "You never call me anything else."
Rose stared at him
Was that really what he was worried about right now?
"That’s because your name is Trevor."
She took another step back.
Something was seriously wrong.
This wasn’t him.
The look in his eyes, the way he was breathing, the heat rolling off his body—none of it made sense.
"What did you take?" she demanded. "Trevor, don’t do anything stupid."
He kept coming.
Rose raised a hand between them.
"Stop. Trevor, snap out of it."
He barely seemed able to hear her.
His balance was unsteady, but somehow he still managed to close the distance. When Rose tried to retreat, he caught her wrist.
The next second, her back hit the wall.
Trevor was much bigger and stronger than she was. His grip made it impossible for her to pull free.
Anger surged through Rose.
Trevor wasn’t the kind of man who would ever force himself on her.
Someone had done something to him.
Someone had drugged him or tampered with him.
Trevor’s eyes dropped to her lips.
He leaned closer.
"Just give me a chance," he whispered.
Rose’s face went pale.
She twisted against his grip, but he wouldn’t let go.
"No."
She stared directly at him.
"Trevor, do you even know what you’re doing?"
There was almost no reason left in his eyes.
His grip tightened as he moved closer, leaving Rose no room to escape.
Panic gave way to anger.
Rose raised her free hand and slapped him across the face.
Trevor’s head jerked to the side.
And at that exact moment—
The lights went out.
Everything plunged into darkness.
