Chapter 2
The next morning, Silas woke Amelia with a kiss, as always."Amy, I messed up our anniversary yesterday, so let's make it up today, okay? Let's go to that amusement park you always wanted to visit."
Amelia had no desire to go, but before she could object, Silas was already packing a bag, even picking out her clothes.
At the amusement park, he was attentive and doting. He offered her water before she even felt thirsty. He bought her every stuffed animal that caught her eye. They rode the carousel, the bumper cars, the Ferris wheel. Silas didn't care how childish the rides seemed; if she enjoyed them, so did he.
He held her hand tightly, refusing to let go even when she tried to pull away. He even bought a balloon and tied it to her bag."Amy," he said with a smile,"now you'll never get lost."
Never get lost. But the place she was going, he would never find her. Silas, you already lost me.
Their good looks and apparent affection attracted attention. People began to recognize them.
"Look, it's Mr. and Mrs. Sterling! We're seeing them in person! They're so cute together!" A young woman excitedly tugged her boyfriend's arm."Excuse me," she said to Amelia,"can we get a picture with you? We're huge fans! Total relationship goals!"
Amelia, seeing the girl's enthusiasm, agreed. Silas, though not fond of photos, happily obliged for Amelia’s sake.
The camera flashed, and the couple thanked them profusely."You guys have such a wonderful relationship. So inspiring! Stay together forever!"
Silas smiled and nodded, not noticing Amelia's silence. Only she knew there would be no "forever."
During lunch, Silas kept checking his phone. Catching Amelia's glance, he apologized."Amy, sorry, I have some urgent work to deal with. You go ahead and eat. I'll be right with you."
But a glimpse of a lavish castle flashed on his screen. He wasn't working. He was watching a livestream.
Then a user named Bethany'sBae appeared, dropping a thousand "super yachts," the platform's most extravagant virtual gift. The screen exploded with animation. Bethany’s viewer count jumped from thousands to millions.
A message followed the gifts: Of course I love Bethany more.
The chat went wild. He’s here! The legend himself!
Bethany preened, her eyes shining with smug satisfaction."See? I told you he loves me!"
Amelia's hand trembled. She looked up, just in time to see Silas's lips curve into a tender smile. He was Bethany’sBae.
It felt as though her heart was being wrung out.
