Chapter 635 Mother’s Crazy Wish
Melissa knew exactly the kind of mess her daughter was in.
This wasn’t just about Elsie losing money in the stock market. In a desperate attempt to recoup her losses, she had taken out leveraged loans, and now she was drowning in staggering debt.
Three hundred million dollars in cash–she had to come up with it within a month, or she’d be facing prison time.
Melissa did have some property under her name, but all of it was tightly controlled by the Blackwood family.
Her former status as a Harper still held some value to the Blackwoods, and there was no chance they’d let frer liquidate assets just to bail Elsie out.
If they found out, not only would she never see the money, but Elsie would likely be sut off as a liability–quietly sent away to protect the family’s reputation.
As for Elsie, after being turned down left and right, she had finally caught a break.
Through her connections, she’d landed a major deal.
If she could get Harper Group to sign a contract with that company, her 300–million–dollar debt could be restructured into a ten- year payment plan. In return, Elsie would be brought on as the company’s director of strategy, which would get her out of this nightmare for good.
The problem was, both Zavier and Raymond had been avoiding her completely lately.
That day, she’d finally managed to see Raymond, but Evelyn was right there beside him, and Melissa couldn’t get a word in.
“Don’t worry too much. Things will work out. If not today, then next time–we’ll find an opening. When I talk to your brother again, I’ll make it clear it’s me who needs help, not you. No matter how distant he’s been, he wouldn’t just stand by and watch his own mother hit rock bottom without lifting a finger.”
Elsie looked up immediately, her eyes glistening with tears, her face full of gratitude. “Mom… you’re too good to me.”
She wiped her eyes and forced a small smile, then stood and headed toward the kitchen. “You must be tired. I prepared some bone broth for you–it’s been kept warm. Have a bowl to settle your nerves.”
Soon, Elsie returned with a steaming bowl of rich broth and placed it on the coffee table in front of Melissa.
Melissa sat on the sofa, watching her daughter’s slender figure move gently under the soft kitchen lighting–graceful, gentle, and obedient.
But then, out of nowhere, a strange thought flashed through her mind.
She had always looked down on someone like Evelyn, who carried what she saw as a provincial, small–town demeanor, becoming her daughter–in–law–it would tarnish the Harper family’s standing.
She’d been constantly worrying about the pressure from the Blackwoods.
But now…
Her gaze rested on Elsie, and her eyes turned deep and complicated.
Was it really so hard to find a suitable wornan around Raymond’s age?
No.
It seemed Evelyn wasn’t the only option..
There was another one… Elsie.
Over and over, she’d dreamed that if Elsie married Sebastian, not only would her daughter be set for life, but Melissa herself could finally hold her head high again among her old society circles.
Before Riley returned, Melissa had seen firsthand how well Raymond treated Elsie.
