Chapter 609 How They Met

Caught off guard, Wayne felt his ears grow warm. He cleared his throat, trying to maintain his dignity, and said with forced seriousness, “No. It’s been a while, but that’s something you should push Seb on–if he takes over the company sooner, the two of us could retire earlier.”

The blame had been shifted so smoothly it was almost impressive.

Sebastian, eyes on the road, didn’t even blink. He glanced casually into the rearview mirror and replied in his usual cool tone, “I said the same thing last year. So who is it that can’t sit still and keeps jumping back into things?”

Miranda was left speechless for a second, caught somewhere between amusement and annoyance. She reached over the seat and gave Sebastian’s shoulder a light, pretend swat. “You little troublemaker! Just like your dad–getting better at pushing my buttons every day.”

A relaxed, comfortable laughter filled the car.

Once the teasing settled, Miranda leaned forward slightly, her attention turning to Riley in the passenger seat. Her tone softened. “Riley, you tell us–what’s good around here? We come back to the estate often enough, but it’s always in a hurry. This whole area has developed so much lately, there are probably places we don’t even know about.”

Riley had clearly done her research ahead of time.

Her eyes brightened as she said, “I looked it up–the historic downtown here has been really nicely restored, and they kept a lot of the original character. There’s an evening live show that works in local folklore, and the reviews are great. Food–wise, it’s the season for freshwater fish, and there’s a restaurant that specializes in daily catches–supposedly super fresh.”

“That sounds perfect, just lovely!” Miranda nodded along, her face showing genuine approval. She looked at Riley with open appreciation. “You went to all that trouble for us, Riley. You’re busy with your own company all day, and you still took time to plan this out.”

Riley wasn’t expecting such direct praise from Miranda, and a faint blush colored her fair cheeks.

She shook her head gently. “It was no trouble, reallyjust a quick search on the phone. And… ever since Sebastian and I got married, our family hasn’t really had a chance to go out together like this. I’ve always felt a little bad about that.”

In that moment, Riley felt deeply grateful to have in–laws as open–minded and understanding as Sebastian’s parents.

It was a world away from the stifling, heavy atmosphere she remembered from the Ashford family.

The Ashfords‘ pettiness, their selfishness, the sharp words–even now, thinking about them made her chest feel tight.

What Miranda and Wayne offered was something entirely different: respect and a warmth she had never dared to hope for.

Even though after marriage, most of her energy still went into running her own company, they had never once complained. In fact, they often reminded Sebastian to support her more.

And unlike some wealthy families she’d heard about, they had never dropped hints about grandchildren from day one, as if the daughter–in–law were just there to carry on the family line.

The thought of children made Riley’s gaze flicker briefly.
