Chapter 608 A Family Outing
She didn’t dare talk back to her grandfather while he was this furious. Biting down hard on her lower lip, she swallowed every ounce of resentment she felt.
Yet behind those glistening tears, an even more stubborn sense of determination was stirring within her.
The more Sebastian tried to distance himself, the more she felt compelled to have him by her side.
Sebastian felt he’d already wasted too much time dealing with Wilson, and a vague sense of irritation began to creep up on him. At the same time, he couldn’t shake the thought of Riley, who was still waiting alone back in their suite.
He quickened his pace toward their toom, pushed the door open, and the warm glow from the living room instantly melted away the chill he’d carried back from outside. Riley had finished her work for the day and was curled up on the large sofa, clearly having waited for him for a while.
Maybe because she’d been waiting so long, she’d ended up dozing off among the soft cushions, with only a light throw blanket draped over her.
Seeing her calm, peaceful face as she slept, the anger that had flared up earlier-after feeling so dismissed-began, almost miraculously, to fade in that very moment.
He softened his steps as he walked over, leaning down to pull the slipping blanket back over her shoulders.
But the moment he got close, Riley stirred awake.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she recognized him and a gentle smile spread across her lips. Her voice still husky from sleep, she asked, “You’re back? How was everything over at Wilson’s?”
Sebastian’s brow lifted slightly, surprise flashing in his deep-set/eyes. “How did you know you’d gone there?”
Riley gestured toward the nearly untouched fruit platter on the coffee table and answered softly, “Your mom stopped by earlier. She saw I was by myself, so she stayed and kept me company for a while. She mentioned you and your dad had been invited over to Wilson’s and probably wouldn’t be back too soon. She even had someone bring me some fresh fruit.”
Sebastian deliberately left out all the pointed comments and tense exchanges from his visit and simply replied, “It wasn’t great.”
His tone was casual, but the lingering coolness in his expression and the slight tightness around his lips quietly told her that his time there had been about more than just a casual get-together.
Riley was perceptive enough to gather from his demeanor that it probably hadn’t been pleasant.
But since Sebastian didn’t seem to want to go into detail, she didn’t press him on things that would only upset him further. Instead, she simply got up and poured him a glass of water.
Watching the sunlight slowly fade outside the window, Sebastian took the glass. Meeting her clear, caring gaze, much of the frustration in his heart began to dissolve.
He glanced at his watch and said to Riley, “Go change into something comfortable. I’ll take you for a drive around the neighborhood.”
“That sounds perfect!” Riley had heard that the historic district nearby was beautifully preserved and full of character, and she’d been wanting an excuse to explore it.
Now that he’d suggested it, her eyes lit up at once. “Wait for me!”
