Sebastian took a moment to consider his words. Since he was speaking to someone dider, he decided not to come on too strong.

“Torres Group has a dedicated team that evaluates ali new proposals,” he said calmly. “If you betrave in this project, Wilson, I’ll have someone from that department reach out to your contact.

“But I should be clear upfront-if it doesn’t meet our criteria, we won’t be moving forward.”

He kept his tone polite, though the message was a firm no.

Wilson’s expression tightened almost immediately. He frowned, clearly feeling brushed offas if Sebastian was making unnecessary hurdles and showing him little respect.

“You’re being pretty formal about this, Sebastian,” Wilson replied, a sharpness edging into his voice. “The person behind this project went to school with Teresa-they’re friends, and we know their background inside out. What’s there to worry about? Teresa can vouch for them too. I really don’t see why we need all these evaluations. Why not cut to the chase and close the deal?”

“Not possible.” Sebastian’s reply was short and direct. “I set a policy a long time ago-no project skips evaluation. No exceptions.”

Seeing Wilson’s face darken, Wayne stepped in smoothly, backing his son with an easy smile to lighten the nood. “Don’t take it personally, Wilson.

“That rule isn’t just for you. Honestly, even when Miranda or I bring in projects we’ve put work into, they still go through the same review. Sebastian holds everyone to it.”

Hearing the former head of Torres Group speak so plainly, Wilson knew he wasn’t getting special treatment today.

His expression shifted several times, but he had little choice except to swallow his frustration.

The truth was, Wilson had invited the father and son for coffee/hoping to fast-track what seemed like a surefire tech project-a move that would earn him major points within the family and lift his branch’s standing for good.

But things weren’t that simple. Under Sebastian’s leadership, Torres Group wasn’t just holding steady-profits kept growing year after year, and shareholder dividends were reliable enough that nobody complained.

At this point, even non-controlling relatives were happy with how Sebastian was running things.

So even as an elder, Wilson really had no foot to stand on when it came to questioning business decisions.

Realizing that, Wilson switched gears. He let out a sigh and said, with a tinge of bitterness, “Alright, if you insist, we’ll do it by the book. Guess it’s a younger generation’s game now. We old-timers can’t quite keep up.”

No sooner had he spoken than a new idea seemed to light up his shrewd, calculating eyes. He went on, “We’ll follow your procedures on the project. But since we’re here-Teresa’s been back from her studies for a while and still hasn’t found the right job Do you think you could find a place for her at Torres Group?

“Her résumé is quite strong-good grades overseas, internship at a Fortune 500 company. She’s plenty capable. You’re running a big operation, Sebastian. You could probably use someone you can trust close by. How about bringing her on as your assistant?”

At that, Wayne’s hand-holding his coffee cup-paused slightly. His smile faded, replaced by a faint look of discomfort.

As someone who’d been around, he couldn’t miss what Wilson was really hinting at.

Every word seemed designed to push his granddaughter closer to Sebastian.

Technically, both families were part of the same extended clan, which meant they were distant relatives. Under normal circumstances, that might make things complicated.

But even though Wilson’s branch carried the Tokes name in the family records, their blood ties to Wayne’s line had thinned out generations back-they were cousins in name more than in practice.

If the idea of pairing the two young people was floating around, neither the law nor modern family norms would really stand in the
