Soon, attendants in elegant evening wear brought out severai trays of delicate pastries, set them down quietly, and withdrew without a sound.
Wilson launched into an elaborate, solemn introduction of the coffee’s origins. “This is from my private collection. A few years back, I bought an entire coffee farm just for a single rare coffee cultivar. Every year, I personally hire trusted hands to hand–pick and roast the beans. You can’t buy this on the market–even if you’re willing to pay a fortune. Its flavor is nothing like the mass- produced coffee you’ll find in stores.”
As he spoke, a clear, melodic piano melody drifted over from a two–story conservatory directly across from the coffee table. The notes flowed gently–the technique was a touch unpolished, but it crafted a soft, refined ambiance that felt intentionally arranged. Sebastian barely lifted his gaze; his eyes flickered toward the conservatory’s lace curtain for less than a second before dropping again, his expression unreadable.
Wayne, worried the atmosphere might grow awkward again, stepped in with a smile. “That’s beautiful music. Did you arrange for a performer, Wilson?”
Wilson had been waiting for that very question. He offered a faint, knowing smile and waved a hand. “No, no outsiders. That’s my granddaughter, Teresa, playing.”
Wayne had caught a glimpse of the girl outside the estate hall the previous day, so he offered a polite remark. “Oh, that’s Teresa? I hadn’t realized she’d grown into such an elegant young woman.”
Wilson shot a meaningful glance toward Sebastian, who remained silent, then let out a light, wistful sigh. “Not like Sebastian–so accomplished at his age. Not only does he run the family business seamlessly, but he’s also settled his marriage. It makes me a little envious.
“My girl, though–she’s at the right age, but still no serjous prospects in sight.”
Then, as if casually, he added, “It weighs on me, honestly. I keep thinking I should find her a good match from a respectable family. But whenever I bring it up, she says she has her own ideas–no clue which guy has caught her eye.”
Wayne took a slow sip of his coffee. “It’s good that the younger generation has their own minds. Shows independence. Makes our jobs as elders a little easier.” He gently sidestepped the topic.
As the two exchanged these polite volleys, Sebastian could keenly feel a gaze coming from the pavilion–piercing through the thin curtain and lingering on him, carrying a vague, unspoken melancholy.
He had no interest in wasting more time here. His thoughts were on Riley, still working in the study, and he wanted nothing more than to return to her.
So he cut straight through Wilson’s suggestive prelude and asked bluntly, “Wilson, you mentioned wanting my input on a project What exactly is the issue?”
Caught off guard, Wilson’s smile stiffened for just an instant–but only an instant.
He did have actual business to discuss, so he set aside his granddaughter–promoting agenda, cleared his throat, and got down to it
“Here’s the situation, Sebastian,” Wilson began, adopting a confiding tone. “Recently, through some connections, I came across project that’s just getting started–it’s in artificial intelligence. As you know, it’s the big trend right now, and the potential looks promising.

“But at my age, I’ll admit, I don’t really grasp all this high–tech talk. Still, I’d hate to let a genuine opportunity pass by.

“So I thought, why not introduce the project team to you directly. Torres Group has the reach and resources–it could be a chance to get into something cutting–edge in a growing industry, maybe even help pivot the business forward.”
Wayne nodded slowly, seeing some reason in the idea.
Though Torres Group had a solid foundation, with how quickly things changed these days, staying only in traditional sectors did carry its own risks.
Sebastian, however, wasn’t moved by the grand promises.
