"Do not worry, Mrs. Calhoun. I will look out for him," Tara answers sincerely. She knows exactly what it takes to run a massive corporate empire; the mental endurance and pressure are staggering. No successful person reaches the top without enduring severe isolation and hardship. Reminding him to eat and showing a little extra care is the least she can do.
"Alright, Mom. That is enough," Danny interrupts coldly, forcing Katie to bite back the rest of her speech.
Katie hesitates, trying to decipher her son's sudden shift. Why is he cutting her off? Was she laying it on too thick? Or does he not want to bring up the past, fearing it might leave a bad impression on Tara? Just as she is spiraling in confusion, she notices Danny giving her a discreet thumbs-up behind Tara's back.
Katie raises an eyebrow, her anxiety instantly vanishing. This sly brat! He is just putting on an act to look tough, but he is secretly thrilled with her performance. Taking the cue, she leans into the emotional angle even harder.
"Danny's father passed away early, so deep down, he really lacks warmth and affection. I am rarely home, and there are very few people we can truly trust. But I believe in your character, Tara. So please, keep an eye on my foolish son."
By the end of her speech, Katie's eyes are glassy with unshed tears. She is completely absorbed in the role, and the emotion is genuine enough to rival any A-list actress in Hollywood.
Tara completely falls for it. Her heart clinches for the imposing man sitting across from her. She nods earnestly. "I promise. We are business partners anyway, and he helps me out all the time. Taking care of small things like this is no problem at all."
Katie finally relaxes. It looks like her son's glorious happily-ever-after is right around the corner.
Danny is immensely pleased, a warm sense of satisfaction spreading through his chest.
She cannot stand looking at them for another second, terrified her blood pressure might spike.
"Alright, I will have the driver take you," Katie replies cheerfully. She immediately turns and gives the butler a few brief instructions, and a driver is instantly dispatched to bring the car around.
Catherine nearly chokes on her rage. Neither of them even tries to ask her to stay! It is infuriating! She is seething with resentment, but her pride prevents her from making a scene. Swallowing her bitter anger, she leaves in a miserable huff.
She realizes she needs to find a way to force Tara to back off. If this catastrophic woman actually joins the Calhoun family, it will be an absolute disaster. Not only would the Dennis family constantly show up demanding favors, but seeing her own daughter-in-law and grandson manipulated and controlled by this girl is completely unacceptable!
