Celia hadn't expected his thoughts to jump straight to Talbot.
Stunned, she blinked up at Alistair, momentarily lost for words.
But to Alistair, her stunned silence meant something else entirely.
Frowning, Alistair's gaze darkened, his eyes heavy with an indecipherable weight. "Celia, I told you before. Talbot Forrester is a man of poor character. He isn't worthy of being your fiancé."
Playing right into his assumption, Celia bit her lip and whispered, "I know everything you've said is true, but..."
"But I just can't forget him."
Pinching her own thigh hard out of sight, she managed to force a few tears to the corners of her eyes.
Alistair saw her bloodshot, teary eyes.
He looked down at her. His tall, imposing frame easily blocked out her entire field of vision, forcing her to look only at him.
Radiating an icy chill, his eyes locked onto her, unblinking.
"When Sheridan returns, I will speak with him about breaking off your engagement to Talbot."
Celia's head snapped up, her eyes wide with fabricated shock. "I want to handle this my—"
"Your father asked me to take care of you," Alistair cut her off. "Talbot is not someone you can rely on. I will be entirely honest with Sheridan."
With red-rimmed eyes, Celia frantically grabbed Alistair's sleeve. "Uncle Alistair—"
She called his name but seemed entirely at a loss for words.
She simply clung to his sleeve.
Head bowed, not saying a single word.
Alistair looked down and saw the hand gripping his shirt.
Her hand was so small and delicate.
Against the backdrop of his own frame, her fingers looked impossibly fragile.
She couldn't even fully wrap her hand around three of his fingers. Her pale skin was nearly translucent, revealing faint, fragile blue veins beneath the surface.
—A stark contrast to the thick, bulging veins on his own hands.
Alistair caught himself thinking that he could probably crush her delicate bones with barely any effort at all.
She was like a newborn kitten, blindly exposing its fragile neck to its owner without a single thought of self-preservation.
