The Platonic Trap novel Chapter 129

She blinked, her eyes widening in genuine surprise as she looked at the man beside her.

At the dining table, he had set his newspaper aside entirely, his cold, aristocratic gaze resting evenly on her.

No wonder she had felt like he was angry all evening.

It was because she had called him "Mr. Zucker" at the office today.

Biting her lip slightly, she explained in a soft voice, "I was worried people might gossip about you."

"You got this position through your own ability. If others want to gossip, that just means they have dirty minds," he stated flatly.

Her voice remained hesitant. "But doing it this way prevents a lot of complications. And you hate complications..."

"You are my responsibility, not a burden," he replied with deadpan seriousness.

Gripping her silverware, she stared down at her plate, saying nothing.

He watched her profile.

After a long moment, seeing she wasn't going to respond, he finally looked away.

They returned to their meal.

Silence hung between them.

Alistair was a fast eater. He had spent years in the military, and even though those days were behind him, some habits simply refused to die.

Finishing his dinner, he wiped his mouth gracefully and stood up, heading toward his study on the second floor.

Watching his broad back retreat up the stairs, a faint smile curved her lips as she idly pushed her food around her plate.

Her cold still hadn't fully broken, so after finishing her meal, she headed straight back to the third floor.

Second floor. The Study.

Alistair was reviewing files on his laptop, the blue light reflecting coldly off his gold-rimmed glasses. His expression was detached, his eyes dark and focused.

Ken Linden called.

"Mr. Zucker, I've wrapped things up here in Seaport City. I'll be flying back to the Capital tonight."

"Understood."

"Oh, also, sir, I have a few documents that urgently need your signature. Will you be staying at the Aerie Manor tonight?"

Alistair glanced down at his watch, his tone utterly devoid of emotion. "Yes. I'll be here."
