Julian nodded. "She's right. I fully support her."
Garnett glanced at Judith. She deliberately looked away, addressing her granddaughter instead. "I support you too, sweetheart."
Garnett's Adam's apple bobbed.
He stared at Lavinia for a long time before his voice finally rasped out. "I'll do it. Lavinia, will you forgive me?"
She met his gaze with absolute indifference. "Someone who is genuinely sorry doesn't negotiate conditions."
Sitting at the far end of the room, Charley Sheffield kept his eyes fixed on Lavinia. At her words, a flicker of light crossed his gaze.
Suddenly, Nestor pointed a finger at Charley, his voice booming. "I've been meaning to ask! This guy isn't a Gilmore and he isn't family, so why the hell is he sitting here? And why did he drop tens of millions to help Lavinia? What exactly is going on between you two?"
Charley stood up with impeccable grace, casually buttoning his suit jacket with one hand. "Since Mr. Harper is so curious, allow me to introduce myself."
He walked over to Lavinia, took her hand, and turned to Judith. "Judith, Lavinia and I share a mutual affection. I'd like to formally court her with the intention of marriage, and I humbly ask for your blessing."
Lavinia looked at him in surprise. The man was usually so understated and reserved; for him to make such a grand declaration in front of a room full of people was completely unexpected. Then again, it was exactly the kind of bold move he would make.
Judith hadn't spent much time with Charley, but in their brief encounters, he had left an excellent impression on her.
