The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 340

He carried immense responsibilities on his shoulders. The partner he chose would need to be someone capable of sharing the weight of his world.

Not a small-town girl like her—someone with no connections, no extraordinary talents, and no grand ambitions.

Lavinia forced down her noodles, her mind heavy and her body exhausted.

She filled the bathtub, dropped in a bath bomb, lit an aromatherapy candle, and tried to soothe her frazzled nerves.

After her bath, just past nine o'clock, her phone buzzed. It was Charley.

The calm she had just managed to scrape together instantly evaporated.

Watching his name flash persistently on the screen, she hit answer.

Charley's gentle voice came through the speaker. "Lavinia, I'm at your door."

Lavinia forced herself to speak. "Didn't we agree to take a few days apart?"

"I have to leave for a while," he said quietly.

Lavinia's heart sank.

"There's an issue with the tungsten mine in the Republic of Golia. I have to go handle it personally. I won't be back for a bit." He paused. "Don't worry. I'll make sure to be back before your court date."

The knot in Lavinia's chest loosened slightly.

"While I'm gone, could you please take care of Nemo for me?" Charley asked. "He's already used to you. He won't behave for anyone else."

He was just here to drop off the dog? Lavinia quickly replied, "I'll be right down."

She was already in her nightgown, which wasn't exactly appropriate for company, so she hastily threw a trench coat over it, grabbed her phone, and ran downstairs.

Pushing the gate open, she saw Charley standing under the streetlamp, holding Nemo's leash.

His eyes darkened as he took in the sight of her hair tumbling loosely over her shoulders and the lace trim of her nightgown peeking out from the collar of her coat.

The sweet, lingering scent of her bath filled the space between them, causing his breath to hitch and grow noticeably hotter.

He handed over the leash in silence. Taking it, she kept her eyes lowered. "The Republic of Golia is pretty dangerous, isn't it?"

"Just a little unstable," he replied, pausing. "Once you leave this country, you realize instability is the global norm."
