Garnett and Joel walked the mountain road for more than an hour and finally saw the warm yellow light.
On the concrete yard of the farm, the outdoor lights swayed gently, and the fire in the charcoal stove was already burning brightly.
From a distance, he heard the sound of a guitar.
It wasn't played from a stereo, but someone holding an instrument and playing it. The notes were carried by the night breeze, drifting over intermittently.
He took a few steps closer and clearly saw the person playing.
Lavinia sat by the fire, her head lowered, her fingers slowly moving over the strings.
She was playing an old classic ballad, the tune was very slow, as if it came from a very distant place.
Garnett stood in the shadow of the lychee tree.
He had never seen her play any instrument. In their two years of marriage, he didn't know she could play the guitar.
When did she learn? Who did she learn from? How many other things about her did he not know?
This marriage was like water off a duck's back, leaving no trace.
Joel nudged him with his elbow. "What's wrong, getting cold feet now that we're here? Since you're here, just go over, I'll cover for you."
Garnett didn't move.
Joel sighed, stepped out of the shadows first, and put a polite smile on his face.
"Oh, we finally made it!" His voice was bright and natural, as if he really came to visit, "Almost got buried in the mountains."
Saul saw him first, put down his beer can, and stood up.
"Joel? What brings you here?"
Then he saw Garnett stepping out of the shadows, and the smile on his face faded.
Lavinia's guitar playing stopped. Her fingers were still pressed against the strings, she looked up, frozen there.
Garnett stood a few steps away, looking at her from a moderate distance, his feet seemingly rooted to the ground.
"Garnett was worried about Lavinia and insisted on coming over to see." Joel said with a smile, "We walked the mountain road for two hours, took the wrong way several times, got bitten all over by mosquitoes, and almost didn't make it out of the mountains just now."
Joel walked towards Saul as he spoke,
"Hey, Saul, you have beer and barbecue, right? Hurry up and get me some, I'm dying of thirst and hunger."
