Lavinia sat outside the door, utterly stunned.
Was Garnett speaking from the heart, or was he just putting on a show for her?
Regardless of his motives, it sounded like Garnett and Sigrid's relationship had officially gone off a cliff.
Lavinia felt deeply disgusted by this utterly pointless melodrama. If Garnett had intentionally left the door cracked so she could hear this, it made it all the more nauseating.
Charley's lips were pressed into a thin line. His expression was flat, but Lavinia noticed his brow seemed slightly furrowed.
She wondered what was going through his head.
Suddenly, the door to the Chairman's office flew open with a bang.
Sigrid stood in the doorway. When she saw Lavinia and Charley sitting in the waiting area, she froze.
Then, she lunged forward in her high heels, raising her hand to strike—
Charley caught the hand swinging toward Lavinia, twisted it behind Sigrid's back, and shoved her away.
Sigrid stumbled forward and crashed heavily onto the floor.
Garnett stepped out of his office just in time to see it. Sigrid was sprawled right at his feet.
The gleaming leather of his dress shoes reflected her tear-streaked, ruined makeup.
He didn't reach down to help her up.
The only emotion Lavinia could see in Garnett's eyes was absolute disdain and cold detachment. She was almost chilled by how ruthless a man could become toward a woman he no longer cared for.
Sigrid finally scrambled to her feet on her own. She looked up at Garnett, then spun around and glared venomously at Lavinia.
Lavinia met her gaze with quiet indifference.
"Your attempt to steal my place failed. Are you really trying to blame me for that?"
Sigrid clenched her fists.
"Lavinia, didn't you betray your own marriage too?"
