Charley's voice was deep. "That's a very luxurious bracelet. I certainly can't afford that."

Lavinia froze.

Garnett's words must have wounded his pride.

Lavinia tugged at his sleeve, a sense of urgency in her voice. "Charley, don't say that. I don't need things like that at all."

She paused, her words firm and clear. "Charley, in my heart, what you've given me is thousands of times more precious than a bracelet."

"Lavinia, what did you just say?" Garnett's voice went completely cold. "What did he give you? Speak clearly!"
