Lavinia poured herself another cup of sake, grinning widely. "Does my husband really tell you everything?"
Sigrid spoke with a melancholy sigh. "We're just friends."
"Ah, right. Friends who enjoy hooking up in our marital bed."
Lavinia paused, studying her.
"Sigrid, I've always been curious. Do you prefer using those spermicide inserts? Or did Garnett make you use them?"
Sigrid's face flushed a deep crimson.
Lavinia encouraged her, "It's fine, you can tell me. I've always been fascinated by his little quirks."
"...It was Garnett who asked me to use them," she mumbled, dropping her gaze. "I'm sorry. I know it's wrong, but I can't stop my feelings, and he can't let me go either."
Lavinia waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, I get it. It's true love. From high school until now, after so many years. So, the day you came back to the country, you two met up at the high school reunion and immediately headed straight to the Arden Estate?"
Sigrid sensed something was off. "Are you losing your mind?"
Lavinia continued, "Losing my mind? You actually think I'd lose my mind over two pieces of trash? You really think way too highly of yourself, and way too little of me."
Sigrid bolted upright. "Lavinia, that's enough!"
Lavinia looked at her, completely unfazed. "Is it? I don't think it's nearly enough. What you two have isn't true love, it's just being pathetic. Understand?"
Sigrid was trembling with fury from the verbal thrashing, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Lavinia, I invited you out today out of the goodness of my heart. I wanted to introduce you to some investment banks. If you don't want my help, fine, but you don't have to insult me like this."
She turned, pulled a document from her bag, and handed it over.
Lavinia took it and glanced at it. It was the divorce agreement she had previously given Sigrid.
In the signature section, only Lavinia's own name was signed.
"Garnett, I..." right on cue, Sigrid began her performance, letting out a delicate sob.
It suddenly clicked in Lavinia's mind. This entire dinner was a trap set by Sigrid.
She had invited Lavinia, but she had also invited Garnett.
Sigrid had calculated the exact time he would arrive, baiting Lavinia into saying she'd stay in the marriage just to spite her right as he walked in.
Brilliant. Truly brilliant. As far as master manipulators went, she was fully committed to the bit.
Garnett's eyes turned a cold, stormy grey, never leaving Lavinia's face.
"Lavinia, were you faking it before?"
Lavinia lowered her eyelashes, the corners of her mouth curling into a cold smirk.
"That's right. Nice to formally meet you, Mr. Harper."
