"It's been half a month, and you still haven't found a single trace of who exactly Charley Sheffield is?" Garnett Harper slammed his hand down onto the desk.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Harper. I really have tried my best," Corinne said, keeping her head bowed.
"Didn't you say you had extensive connections in the government? How can you not dig up a single thing on him!"
"Mr. Harper, I asked a lot of people, but there's no news. However, one friend did share a theory with me," Corinne said, carefully weighing her words.
"What theory?" Dark clouds gathered in Garnett's eyes.
"My friend said that if there's absolutely no public information available on Charley Sheffield, it might be because he's under the protection of the Aegis Network."
Garnett paused slightly. "What's the Aegis Network?"
Corinne looked at him. "It's a state-level security apparatus designed to protect highly sensitive individuals. As long as someone is on their list, the network actively scrubs and blocks all their information from public channels."
Garnett pondered this for a few seconds before saying dismissively, "Impossible. We went to high school together. He doesn't strike me as someone involved in classified operations."
Corinne quickly agreed. "I thought the same thing. He stands out way too much."
Garnett shot her a sharp glare. Only then did Corinne realize she had said the wrong thing.
"Mr. Harper, what I meant was..."
"Enough nonsense. Keep digging. If you can't find anything domestically, check the US. Didn't he go to college there? He has relatives overseas. It's impossible for his records to be completely erased in America, too."
Corinne nodded eagerly. "You're absolutely right. I had tunnel vision and didn't think of that layer. I'll get on it immediately."
"And what about Latham's treatment facility? Have you still not found out where he is?" Garnett raised an eyebrow.
Corinne froze. She had assumed her boss no longer cared about his soon-to-be ex-wife, so she hadn't been actively looking.
"Mr. Harper, I've already ruled out half of the overseas radiopharmaceutical treatment centers. I'm currently vetting the remaining half."
Sigrid placed the thermos on the desk and smiled softly. "Garnett has seemed so exhausted lately. I think he's getting run down, so I made him a wellness soup to boost his vitality. Corinne, you have to make sure he drinks it all."
Corinne groaned inwardly.
The boss never took a single sip of Sigrid's homemade soups. He always made Corinne throw them out.
She couldn't even pour it out completely; she had to leave a little residue in the container to make it look like he had actually drank it.
She also had to sync up with Garnett every time to tell him what kind of soup it was, just in case he slipped up in conversation.
Caught between her boss, his wife, and his mistress, being a corporate drone was downright exhausting.
But Corinne didn't let it show. She smiled and promised to make sure it was taken care of.
Sigrid didn't leave right away. She casually started flipping through the documents on Corinne's desk. Corinne hated when she did this but didn't dare say a word.
