In his entire life, Nikolai had never experienced such anxiety. He wasn’t as anxious as he was now even when she was stabbed by a spear.
She appeared to have disappeared in a stupor as soon as he pointed the book at her face. Her eyes were ablaze with golden light, locked on his face and slowly… He could see tears starting to form in her hazel-gray eyes.
Fear overcame him.
He couldn’t help but question himself. Had she been threatened by Boris? Had she met his mother? Was she in any way hurt?
In a state of increasing worry, he questioned her continuously. She appeared perplexed, tears filling her eyes, eventually turning them bloodshot as if she had been crying for hours. He realized she didn’t know about the tears threatening to spill from her eyes until she raised her voice.
She was dozing off on the bed, still covered in his cloak, and he was sitting in the chair, staring at her.
Despite her best efforts to hide her feelings on her face, he could see that she was genuinely stunned even though she didn’t cry out or respond when he told her she was on the point of tears.
What happened to her? Why the rapid change in mood? If she wasn’t hurt or threatened… What was wrong?
With a groan, Nikolai turned his gaze to the book in his hand tracing his fingertips over the carving of the symbol of the wolf howling to the moon.
“She chose this?” He asked with a whisper filled with disbelief. “Interesting.” He carefully opened the book, and when he saw the handwriting, he

Naughed heartily.
“Blood.”
Instead of ink, the author had used blood to write.
“This writing is really subtle. It’s impossible to tell that an eight year old boy wrote this.” He murmured, pressing his fingers against the paper.
He abruptly lost his smile and closed the book. “I was pathetic, wasn’t I?” He questioned Pain, who was lying down next to the chair.
Remembering his cousins’ reactions when they learned a little bit about him, his smile returned. He rose up and stared at the book as it was abruptly shrouded in dark mist.
“Remorse, guilt, despair, rage, and hatred. It won’t be fun anymore when they ultimately go nuts from all those unpleasant emotions, though not as nuts as I am.” Nikolai muttered, clicking his tongue.
He was irritated by the words Sasha and Viktor spoke. “How is it possible that they believe I wish to salvage a family that has been doomed from the start? Why me, when no one has ever attempted to save this family? This family has left me with both mental and emotional scars. All I want is to be happy. Fucking my own happiness.” He whispered that last statement and grinned as he turned to look at Ophelia.
He sighed as he recalled the expression she had in the library when she stated, “When it’s family, it’s different.”
In reality, she was in the dark. She had her luck with her siblings despite her father, uncle, and her tense connection with her mother. She really did.
“I envy you.”
“You shouldn’t.”
Nikolai smiled and the book vanished from view. “Why?”

Ophelia jerked her eyes open. “Envy never results in anything positive.”
“It is a positive form of envy.”
Sighing, Ophelia slumped herself in a sitting position and fixed her gaze on Nikolai. His eyes were tenderly riveted on her, but they were also whirling
with the madness he carried inside.
“Your parents raised you to be a psychopath?” She asked, grabbing the cloak covering her.
“Hmm.” Nikolai rubbed his chin, fluttering his lips, “Or similar to that?”
“You won’t tell me?”
Nikolai shook his head and laughed. “Oh my sweetheart, I would never tell you anything that could put you in danger. You have been doing nothing but putting yourself in danger for some time now.”
“How much do you know about me?”
“Enough to know you are the one meant for me?”
Ophelia almost scoffed, but she managed to keep it together while trying not to yell at him. “Nikolai, I don’t like you answering my questions with questions.”
“It’s the only way to stop you from asking more questions.” Nikolai mumbled indifferently. “Eventually, you’ll become frustrated.”
“How is my kind related to the blood pearl?” Nikolai’s face darkened as Ophelia aggressively questioned him.
“Are you aware of the pearl?” he inquired, then pouted his bottom lips in exasperation. “Yulia.”
“Nikolai, tell me.” Ophelia urged.
“Sleep.” Nikolai turned away, whispering.

I’m going to be your wife, I need to know everything about you so that I can keep you safe from harm!” Nikolai tensed up as Ophelia shrieked.
He nearly lost sight of how obstinate she was and he cursed how accurate she was. “Goddess!” She was standing directly in front of him when he gently turned to look at her and exhaled. Her crossed arms gave her a commanding appearance.
“Adorable.” He smiled and poked her nose softly.
“Nikolai.” She sighed in annoyance and grabbed his wrist with both hands. “Stop ducking my questions.”
“I’ll respond to one question,” Nikolai retorted.
“And you are free to stop if you become uncomfortable.” Ophelia said excitedly and he poked her nose again while grinning and nodding to her.
“Very well, my sweet, but on one condition.” Nikolai lowered his arm and mumbled.
“What condition?” Ophelia inquired, her eyes widening in interest.
