32 RAINBOWS AND CANDY

The dark fairy’s outburst made Nikolai smile even wider. Although

invigorating, the dragoness battling in his arms didn’t compare to the wrath in her eyes.

“I did nothing to you, Esmeralda.” He casually remarked.

“Oh Nikolai Novikov, You have done so much for me and my people.

You know very little and don’t know much.” Esmeralda said through

her teeth.

Rhaziel’s brows were furrowed in mild surprise as he watched and

listened.

“Nikolai, let go of me!” Ophelia screamed. She was getting tired of

these struggles. It wasn’t an interest! And she was starving!

He didn’t budge and she simply snapped by removing her dagger from her pocket and thrusting it into his stomach.

Nikolai winced and instantly let her go.

She pulled out the dagger, dashed at Esmeralda and freed her wrists

and legs from the chains.

Esmeralda stood up, but Nikolai tugged Ophelia backward by pulling her all the way up against the room’s wall and firmly pinning her

there.

“I am making this effort for you.” Nikolai barked.

Ophelia’s pupils flitted. “What?!”

“You mentioned being hungry and not wanting to waste time here, so I’m trying to assist you as soon as I can.”

Ophelia bit back a scream at his words and slammed her head into his.

Nikolai let out a deep animal–like growl, let her go, and took stiff steps away from her, rubbing his aching brow.

“Help me?!” She shouted. “You attempted to kill

me,

Twice!”

“First of all, I didn’t attempt to kill you.” Nikolai muttered while cocking his

head.

“And when you choke me?” Ophelia erupted.

“In a way, it was erotic.” Nikolai dryly teased.

Ophelia scoffed and placed her dagger into her pants pocket. “As usual,

you are absurd and I am not surprised that you are one hell of a sadist, but killing me…”

“Fire Storm, I didn’t try to kill you.”

“Nikolai!” Ophelia screamed out in anger and pointed at him. Her face stern with rage and extreme seriousness.

“I don’t want your obsession, I don’t need your protection, and I don’t want you to kill me. Actually, it should be the other way around, but I’m resisting because I want to prevent a war! However, be aware that I will hurt you ten times more if you attempt to harm me in any manner.”

Nikolai froze. He stared at her intensely and Ophelia saw it. He stared at her she was the source of his bad luck in life. She unconsciously took a step back, which Nikolai saw and caused him to droop his head. Simply by calling him pointless, she had forced him to reveal a hitherto concealed

side to her.

“Protection… Obsession… I don’t do all of that Fire Storm,”

“Then what do you do? You said you didn’t try to kill me so what did you do?” She decided to ignore his statement and focus on the main topic here. “You were in your demon state, and I have facts to support my belief that since demons are simply that, you are incapable of experiencing any emotions in that state.”

“But you could feel my heart pumping in that same state.”

When his voice abruptly became soft, Ophelia froze. Was he using her as a

pawn?

“You misunderstood me and tackled me,” He let out a small chuckle and a big smile appeared on his face. “But I wanted to use my demonic powers to help you wake her up.”

He appeared to be content, but Ophelia knew otherwise. He was not.

“I wanted to take advantage of the fact that you were afraid of me in the worst way possible.”

Unconsciously, Ophelia took a further step back. She experienced a sudden, severe ache in her chest but ignored it. Nikolai fastened his sight on her and looked longingly at her. He stopped staring at her as if she were the source of his misfortune. Was that a subconscious action?

Ophelia’s eyes lit up. “So you intended to choke me to death?”

“If the circumstances were different, I could choke you” Nikolai snorted.

Ophelia turned her head away from him and averted her eyes with her palms on her hot face. “Shut up.”

Nikolai grinned. “Do not expect rainbows and candy from me, Fire Storm,”

He abruptly materialized in front of her and lifted her chin as she firmly grasped the collar of his cloak.

He turned his lips to her ear while leaning near to her. “I am dark and

toxic.”

“And why are you telling me this?” Ophelia questioned while holding her breath due to the scorching sensation caused by their proximity.

“I want to have nothing to do with you.” She added.

“Like I said before, I have work to do.” Nikolai whispered harshly in her ear.

If she tried to run from him, he would have no choice but to entrap her in terror. It wouldn’t take much work or difficulty for him to make her

terrified of him.

“You led me to stab you when all I wanted to do was ask her questions.” Ophelia mumbled, letting go of his cloak’s neck, and put her hand on his covered stomach, feeling the heat of his blood that was dripping onto his
