By the time Cassidy helped Jasmine over to Valery's room, Valery had just drifted off to sleep.
Mrs. Smith shot Jasmine a reproachful look. "Why are you only getting here now? Didn't we send for you last night?"
Catching sight of the red welt still marking Jasmine's cheek, a brief flash of guilt crossed Mrs. Smith's face. Softening her tone slightly, she sighed, "Never mind. Nothing happened. Just wait here, and when Valery wakes up, go in and keep her company."
Jasmine didn't respond to the demand. Instead, she said, "Mom, Yates and I shouldn't go through with the wedding."
Before Mrs. Smith could react, Yates instantly stepped forward. "I refuse!"
"Yates, I told you yesterday. If we get married, Valery will absolutely want to be there," Jasmine stated calmly. "If you tell her she can't come, she'll be furious. If you try to bring her, the doctors won't allow it. So, what's the solution?"
"I just can't bear to see Valery suffer anymore. Compared to her health, my own happiness means nothing."
Mrs. Smith was completely cornered by Jasmine's logic. "Well... you have a point."
"No!" Yates quickly interrupted. "Valery has always said that one of her biggest dreams is to see us tie the knot!"
"Besides, if you tell her the wedding is off right now, not only will her dream be crushed, but she'll inevitably think it's because she ruined the engagement party! That'll shatter her!"
Mrs. Smith snapped out of her daze. "Yes, exactly! Valery wants to see you two married."
"And don't worry, we'll actually go. You can pick the destination. We'll take plenty of photos for Valery, and she'll be so happy for us."
Mrs. Smith heaped on the praise. "That's a brilliant idea! Really brilliant! You two should go get the papers signed today. Valery is still beating herself up over the engagement party, so bringing her a marriage certificate is exactly the pick-me-up she needs."
"I disagree," Jasmine countered. "What if Valery sees pictures of us traveling and realizes she's stuck here? What if it just makes her miserable because she can't join us?"
"Well..."
As Yates desperately scrambled for a comeback, Mr. Smith suddenly spoke up. "You'll do exactly what your mother and Yates suggested. Go sign the papers today to cheer Valery up. Then you can go on your little honeymoon—just keep it local. Find a scenic spot Valery has already visited, snap a few photos, and be done with it."
