The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 256

The Metro Textile & Fabric Expo opened at nine in the morning.

The exhibition center was located in the new district, which was over an hour's drive away.

Nora had woken up just in time, leaving no spare moments for idle chatter. She threw on her clothes and hurried downstairs.

Maloney followed her into the exact same car.

"I'm heading to the new district," Nora noted, glancing at Maloney, who had climbed in from the other side. "It's completely out of your way."

"I'll drop you off first." Maloney instructed the driver to get moving before turning back to Nora. "We need to talk."

Nora knew exactly what Maloney wanted to discuss.

She blinked her innocent eyes. "I can cancel on David, but you have to tell me why."

Noticing Maloney's furrowed brow, she pressed on. "If David is looking for me, it has to mean something happened with my mother, or maybe my father."

"I'll just go hear him out to gather some information, and I'll tell you everything afterward."

"Besides, we're meeting at my studio. My employees and security are all there. Worst-case scenario, the conversation ends and I skip dinner with him."

Maloney was silent for a few seconds before speaking. "Nora, he's plotted against you before. There's no need to maintain this facade of a relationship with him."

Nora shook her head. "I'm not maintaining a facade. I haven't even had dinner with him lately."

"You don't need to talk to him either."

"But he has something to tell me."

"Who knows if he's just plotting against you again."

Nora swatted Maloney's arm and muttered, "If you know something, you need to tell me right now."

Maloney just frowned in silence again.

He had been acting like this since earlier.

He didn't want Nora to see David, but he refused to explain why.

"Maloney," Nora said gently. "David explained what happened last time."

"While Bella was exiled, she hooked up with a local official."

"That official isn't anyone special, but his uncle is a major leader on the ethics committee in the capital. The man holds a lot of power when it comes to promoting leadership teams."

"David has been sitting in his deputy director position for years. It was about time he thought about a promotion."

"Bella found his weak spot, and he couldn't resist the temptation. I can understand his motives, but I can't trust him anymore."

"Moreover, Bella's original plan was to have David convince me to let her come back. David never asked me, but he never warned me either. He just let her return and allowed Vivian and Bella to back me into a corner."

"Technically, he didn't plot against me. He just chose not to help anyone."

Nora earnestly laid out the entire explanation.

Maloney's voice was grim. "Do you just believe everything he says?"

"Then tell me, which part is a lie?" Nora murmured. "Didn't you investigate him too?"

"He has selfish motives." Maloney's tone grew even heavier. "He's afraid of offending you, but he refuses to give up the benefits Bella brings him."
