She hung up the phone.
"He's not coming," Nora said.
"So sudden?" Cassidy asked, surprised.
Just a moment ago, Maloney had sounded like a peacock showing off its feathers, practically dying to rush over and drag Nora back to his lair.
"Yeah." Nora was actually a little surprised too.
This seemed to be the very first time Maloney had backed out of a promise at the last minute.
It had never happened before.
Especially since they were still in the middle of a cold war.
Maloney had been seizing every possible chance to glue himself to her side.
It must have been a genuine emergency.
"Whatever." Nora didn't dwell on it. She looked at Cassidy. "Should we go get dinner?"
Cassidy checked the time; it was barely past five. "It's a bit early. Want to check out my office?"
"Sure."
The two of them left the cafe and headed into the adjacent office building.
Cassidy's office was nothing extraordinary.
The space wasn't huge, and things were somewhat messy, with the only exception being the perfectly organized stacks of files on the desk.
"Don't mind the mess. The files are organized by my secretary. He doesn't touch my personal belongings, so half the room is neat and the other half is a disaster."
"Was that guy who greeted us at the door your secretary?"
"Yep."
"He looks really polished."
"Are you into that type?"
"Stop trying to frame me." Nora shot Cassidy an exasperated look. "I was just complimenting him."
"I know, I know." Cassidy laughed. "Just an observation."
She pulled up a few photos on her phone. "My secretary is way too gentle-looking, he doesn't give off a strong vibe. Let me show you my personal trainer. Now that's a guy who looks like he can get things done."
Nora leaned in. "Let me see."
"And my bodyguards, their biceps are so thick they look like they're about to rip through their sleeves."
"I've seen them. The two bodyguards you assigned to me last time were built like tanks."
"Right? And you insisted on returning them."
"..."
Nora changed the subject. "By the way, what about Parker? Has he been coming to the company lately?"
"No," Cassidy said flatly. "Ever since he got into that fight with a supplier and ended up in the police precinct, I bailed him out, but my in-laws grounded him. He learned his lesson and went right back to his old life of partying and goofing off."
"Really?" Nora was surprised. "He caved that easily?"
"Tell me about it." Cassidy chuckled. "Honestly, even if the fight hadn't happened, he wouldn't have lasted long at the firm anyway."
"Why do you say that?" Nora asked.
"He only made a fuss about coming to work because he hated that I was making all the decisions. He thinks because he's a man, he has the right to control me."
