The cameras hadn't captured exactly where it went.
Knowing his wife's baffling lack of self-preservation, Maloney easily deduced she had handed it off to Seraphina.
He often couldn't fathom Nora's actions, but he could usually track her chaotic logic.
She constantly prioritized everyone else's comfort over her own.
Case in point: the moment Seraphina moved back to the city, Nora had immediately tried to file for divorce to clear the way.
Sure, it was built on a massive misunderstanding.
But she really was too damn generous for her own good.
In Nora's mind, if you removed Maloney from the equation, she didn't have any real beef with Seraphina. Seraphina had even technically helped her deal with Bella.
Clearly, childhood debts carried a lot of weight in her twisted little head.
But how could she simply remove her husband from the equation?
Did she have any idea how ruthlessly Seraphina was trying to destroy her marriage behind her back?
Thinking she had cracked the case, Nora eagerly explained, "I gave the wrap to Seraphina."
"Her evening gown was completely ripped open. It was silk, so the fabric was just drooping, and she couldn't even pin it back together. I just gave her my coat so she wouldn't flash everyone."
"I didn't expect Diana to make me and Cass take the outside path back to the front doors. But I couldn't just demand it back... It's fine though. The path wasn't that long. Cass and I just jogged the whole way, so we weren't freezing for too long..."
She jogged on a sprained ankle?!
Before Nora could even finish her sentence, Maloney flipped her over his lap and delivered a fourth, furious swat.
Nora was stunned into absolute silence.
Now she was genuinely livid.
She grabbed his offending hand and sank her teeth into his knuckles.
Seeing her thrash around, and terrified she would bash her injured ankle against the door, Maloney clamped one hand over her back and the other firmly over her calves, pinning her still.
By the time the SUV pulled into their driveway, Nora had fallen sound asleep draped across his lap.
The adrenaline crash was brutal.
Coupled with the heavy drowsiness from the cold medicine, she was out cold.
When Maloney scooped her out of the vehicle, she stirred slightly.
"We're home."
Hearing the comforting rumble of his chest, Nora fluttered her eyes open for a fraction of a second before burying her face into his coat and instantly going back to sleep.
Her head lolled heavily against his shoulder.
Nora was notoriously a terrible sleeper.
She was insanely picky about her mattress and her pillows. She demanded pitch-black darkness and absolute silence. She always slept with the covers pulled over her head, and hated waking up in vast, open spaces.
In unfamiliar environments, her anxiety spiked, making sleep impossible.
