By the time Maloney tossed Nora over his shoulder and carried her out of the hospital, she genuinely had no idea why he was so furious.
"What exactly do you want me to say?"
"Take a wild guess."
"How am I supposed to know if you don't tell me! Are you playing riddles with me?"
Maloney delivered a firm swat to her backside.
Nora puffed her cheeks out in pure outrage.
But she knew when she was beaten.
She couldn't fight him, and she certainly couldn't run. So she softened her tone and muttered, "I already told you. Cass saw her enemy and wanted to go check it out."
"She's almost five months pregnant. I obviously couldn't let her go alone. So I went with her. It turned out it really was her enemy, and the moment we got there, his goons blocked us in."
"But it wasn't actually dangerous. We were in a crowded hotel. It wasn't like they were going to kidnap us in broad daylight. We just got held up."
"And then when we made our escape, my heels were too high. I slipped, twisted my ankle, and dropped my phone."
"Cass's enemy is Lucius Vane. I told you I saw him when I was a kid."
"That's literally everything! Why are you spanking me?"
By the end of her summary, she sounded genuinely wronged.
Maloney delivered a second, harder swat.
The sting made her jump.
Nora let out an indignant squeak.
Furious, she kicked her legs, thumping her toes against his waist.
Maloney scoffed internally.
Why was he spanking her?
Listen to her ridiculous explanation.
She babbled a million words, but conveniently left out the part where she was violently shoved against a wall, how she scraped her palms raw, how a man tried to physically rip her phone from her hands, or how she was genuinely terrified. Not a single word about any of that.
Granted, her injuries weren't severe.
No broken bones, no concussion. Aside from the mild sprain on her left ankle, she didn't even have a bruise.
But did that mean she could just brush it off entirely?
The emergency room doctor had strictly emphasized she wasn't to put any weight on it for forty-eight hours to avoid aggravating the joint.
Yet she had literally hiked halfway around the hotel perimeter in the freezing cold on that twisted ankle.
And hadn't made a single peep of complaint.
When Maloney had found her in the lobby, she had hidden the limp so flawlessly he hadn't even noticed it at first.
Her pain tolerance was infuriating.
