The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 213

"What's wrong?" Nora asked as she walked out of the restroom.

"Look at those guys," Cassidy said, subtly jutting her chin toward the retreating figures. "Do you recognize them?"

Nora squinted down the hall. "No."

They definitely weren't among the executives Maloney had introduced her to earlier.

"Something about them feels off," Cassidy muttered. "I'm going to follow them."

"I'm coming with you." Nora immediately fell into step beside her.

The group of men piled into the elevator.

Cassidy waited until the doors slid shut and the cruel laughter was cut off. She sprinted to the elevator bank and watched the digital display drop from the third floor down to the first. Once the numbers stopped moving, she hit the down button.

The hotel's layout had the main gala in the grand ballroom on the first floor, dining on the second, and VIP private rooms on the third.

Cassidy led Nora out of the elevator and back onto the first floor.

Nora still hadn't grasped the situation. She whispered, "Who were those guys?"

"I'm pretty sure they're Vane's Enforcers." Cassidy stood near the entrance of the ballroom, scanning the crowd. When she couldn't spot them, she grabbed Nora's hand and pulled her toward the exit.

Nora was thoroughly confused. "Who is Lucius Vane?"

"A dangerous mob boss," Cassidy explained as they briskly walked down the corridor. "He's my mother-in-law's rival."

"Years ago, Lucius set his sights on my mother-in-law's sister and sent his thugs to kidnap her. Her family fought back violently. In retaliation, Lucius tried to bankrupt their entire corporation. Thankfully, my mother-in-law is a force of nature and actually managed to put him behind bars instead."

Nora let out a soft gasp. "Wow."

"The problem is, he wasn't supposed to be released this early." Cassidy's brow furrowed tightly. "I need to confirm if those were his men. If they are, I have to warn my mother-in-law immediately."
