“After you collapsed, the doctors ran some tests,” Olivia said quietly. “They found something concerning in your bloodwork.
I sat in the sterile examination room, my head still pounding from the episode. I remembered the dizzy spell, the world tilting sideways, then nothing. When I woke up, I was already in the hospital.
“I found a doctor who can explain everything,” she continued, her voice gentle.
The doctor who entered was about sixty, with silver hair and tired eyes that had seen too much suffering. He introduced himself as a
toxicology specialist and got straight to business.
“Ms. Taylor, have you been taking any medication regularly?” he asked, scanning my chart.
I thought back to the pills Christine had given me. “Before my pregnancy, I took something my… mother called ‘fertility supplements. She
said they would help me conceive.”
The doctor’s expression darkened. “We found toxic compounds in your bloodwork that are consistent with a slow-acting poison.”
“Poison?” My voice sounded hollow, disconnected from my body.
“This particular toxin gradually destroys the female reproductive system. With prolonged use, it causes permanent infertility.”
The room started spinning. “But I’m pregnant now.”
“Yes, and that’s why we’re concerned. The toxins have already begun affecting fetal development. Your babies may have congenital blood
disorders.
“Babies?” I gripped the edge of the examination table.
The doctor nodded. ‘You’re carrying twins. The second fetus wasn’t visible during earlier ultrasounds because its gestational sac is smaller and positioned in a way that made detection difficult.”
Twins. Under any other circumstances, this would have been the happiest news of my life. Now it felt like another knife twisting in my
gut.
“What can we do? My voice cracked.
The doctor sighed heavily. “The poison has entered your bloodstream. We can’t effectively treat it without terminating the pregnancy.”
“No.” The word came out before I could even think. “There must be something else. These might be the only children I’ll ever have.”

Ms. Taylor, I understand your distress, but-

‘You don’t understand!” Tears streamed down my face. If what you’re saying is true, I can never have children again. I can’t lose these
babies. I’ll do anything. Take any risk. Please.”
The doctor’s expression was full of pity. “The toxins are already in your system. There’s no treatment that won’t endanger both you and
your babies.
“There must be something,” I begged.
“I’m sorry.” He shook his head. “My medical recommendation is to terminate the pregnancy and focus on your recovery. And I strongly suggest you press criminal charges against whoever did this to you.”
I sat there, numb with shock. Christine. The woman who raised me had been slowly poisoning me. She hadn’t just tried to keep me from Blake-she’d tried to ensure I could never have his children. Never have anyone’s children.
‘Ms. Taylor? Do you understand what I’m saying?”
I nodded slowly, my eyes burning with unshed tears.
Night had fallen by the time I reached the Grant estate. Security didn’t stop me-they all knew who I was. I moved through the house like a ghost, following the sound of voices to Emma’s room.
I stood in the doorway, watching Emma and Christine laugh together. They froze when they noticed me.
“Aria!” Emma’s voice was sharp with annoyance. “How dare you come in without knocking? Have you forgotten basic manners?`
I stepped into the room, feeling strangely detached from my body. They both flinched at whatever they saw in my eyes.
‘What’s wrong with you?” Emma demanded, but her voice wavered.
My gaze fell on the silver fruit knife on the table next to a bowl of perfectly arranged apples. I picked it up, testing its weight in my hand.
Emma scrambled backward, falling off her chair. “You-you’re trying to kill me!”
Christine stepped forward, hands on her hips. “Put that knife down this instant! How dare you threaten Miss Grant?”
I almost laughed. She still thought she could control me with that authoritative tone, still saw me as the frightened little girl who would do anything to please her.
I turned and slashed the knife across the framed photo on Emma’s dresser-the one of Christine and Emma at some charity gala, both smiling like they owned the world. Glass shattered. I moved to the next photo, and the next, destroying every image that showed their

perfect fake lives.
“Stop it!” Christine lunged toward me.
I spun around and slapped her hard across the face. The crack echoed in the room. Christine stumbled backward, her hand flying to her
reddening cheek.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.” I shoved her. She fell against the bed, eyes wide with genuine fear.
Emma screamed, backing against the wall.
“The ‘fertility supplements’ you gave me for three years, I hissed. “They were poison. Did you ever imagine this day would come? That I’d discover what you did and come for revenge?”
Christine clutched the bedpost, pulling herself up. “You’re insane! I never poisoned you!”
“Stop lying.” I grabbed a handful of Emma’s dresses from the closet and slashed through them with the knife. Silk and cashmere fell in ribbons. “The doctors found the toxins in my blood.”
“Aria, I’m your mother!” Christine sobbed. “How can you believe I would do something so terrible?”
Her words sparked something in me-not doubt, but fury. I reached into my bag and pulled out an envelope.
“My mother? Let’s settle that once and for all.” I shoved the papers in her face. “DNA test results. I collected your hair samples myself and had them tested at the most reputable lab in New York. We share zero genetic material, Christine. Zero.”
“This is fake!” She grabbed the papers, tearing them to shreds. “I carried you for nine months! I gave birth to you!”
“More lies.” I felt eerily calm now. I swept my arm across Emma’s vanity, sending perfume bottles and jewelry crashing to the floor. “I don’t even care why you pretended to be my mother all these years. All I care about is what you took from me.”
Christine pressed herself against the wall. “If you hurt me, you’ll go to prison. Is that what you want?”
I laughed, the sound hollow and foreign even to my own ears. “You think I care about living? My father is dead. My babies are dying. What
do I have left?”
“You’re not thinking clearly,” Christine whispered, her face pale.
“I’ve never thought more clearly in my life.” I raised the knife, pointing it at her. I should kill you right now. But that would be too easy. I want you to suffer like I’ve suffered. I want you to lose everything like I’ve lost everything.”
Emma suddenly bolted for the door, her terrified face a flash of blonde hair and wide eyes.
Something about her expression-the genuine fear-triggered a memory. My grip on the knife faltered.
