Chapter 92
BLAKE

I paced outside the hospital room, checking my watch for the twentieth time in an hour. Twenty-four hours since Aria collapsed. Twenty-
four hours of doctors, tests, and waiting. I hadn’t left the hospital since they brought her in.
The door opened. A doctor stepped out.
“She’s stable, Mr. Morgan. The sedatives are wearing off. She should wake soon.”
I nodded, throat tight.
“But she needs to stay calm when she wakes. Her blood pressure is concerning.”
“I understand.”
He left, and I entered the dimly lit room. Aria looked small in the hospital bed, her face pale against the white sheets. I pulled a chair close, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest. The faint beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound.
I reached for her hand, then stopped. She wouldn’t want me touching her. Not now. Maybe not ever again.
Her eyelids fluttered.
“Aria?” I leaned forward.
She jerked awake suddenly, gasping. “No, please don’t!”
“You’re awake.” I stood, moving closer.
Her eyes darted around the room, finally focusing on me. She relaxed slightly, noticing my black sweater and jeans.
“Blake,” she said, voice raspy. “What time is it? I need to get to the Redwood Medical Center. Dad’s waiting for me.”
My stomach dropped. “Aria-
“I need my phone.” She pushed herself up. “And my teddy bear. The one Dad gave me. Where is it?”
“Aria, stop. I placed my hand on her shoulder.
“I’m fine.” She brushed me off. “Just help me get dressed. Dad’s probably wondering where I am.”
I gripped her wrist when she tried to stand. “We’ve been at the hospital for a day now.”

She frowned. “What?”
“You’ve been unconscious for twenty-four hours. I brought you here yesterday. Everything has already happened.
Comprehension dawned slowly. Her face went white.
“No, she whispered. ‘No, that’s not-
“I’m sorry.”
She pulled away from me, shaking her head. “Are you trying to tell me my father is dead?”
I couldn’t answer. My silence confirmed everything.
“You wanted this. Her voice hardened. “You never liked him. You never thought he was good enough.”
“That’s not true.”
“You thought my dad was just some nobody. Some worthless employee.”
“I never said that.” I reached for her, but she jerked away.
“You did. You said he wasn’t worthy of being associated with the Morgan family. That he was beneath us.”
‘I was angry when I said those things. I didn’t mean-
“Yes, you did!’ Her eyes flashed. “You meant every word. And now he’s gone.”
“Aria, I’m truly sorry for what I said. It wasn’t about your father.”
She laughed, cold and hollow. “Right. It wasn’t personal. Just business, right, Blake? Everything’s just business to you.”
She tried to stand again. I blocked her.
“You need to rest.
“Get out of my way.” She pushed against my chest. ‘I need to see my father.”
“You can’t.”
“Why? Because you say so? You don’t control me!
“Because it’s too late! My voice rose. “He’s gone, Aria.”

She crumpled then, tears flowing down her cheeks. Her body shook with sobs. I reached for her, but she slapped my hands away.

‘This is your fault,” she said through her tears. “You wouldn’t let me bring him home to the Hampton estate. You wouldn’t let me visit
him more often.”
“Aria, that’s not-
‘You kept saying he was fine at Redwood. That he had the best care. But he wasn’t fine!” She pounded her fist against my chest. “If he d
been with me, this wouldn’t have happened. He wouldn’t have been alone by that lake inside Redwood. He wouldn’t have drowned!”
Each accusation hit harder than a physical blow. I stood there and took it, knowing nothing I said would matter now.
“So this is all your fault, she continued, her voice breaking. “If it wasn’t for you, my dad wouldn’t be…”
She couldn’t finish the sentence. She pushed past me, stumbling toward the door.
“Where are you going?” I grabbed her arm.
“To find my father.” Her eyes were wild. “He’s in that cold morgue. He must be so cold and lonely.”
I held her shoulders firmly. “Aria, stop. He’s not in the morgue anymore. They’ve taken him to the funeral home to prepare for the
service.
“No!” She struggled against my grip. “No, I need to see him!”
“You can’t.”
‘Let me go!”
“Not until you calm down.”
“My physical condition is none of your business! Whether I live or die has nothing to do with the Morgan family!”
Her words cut deep. I kept my face neutral, hiding the pain.
‘You always do this, she spat. ‘You only pretend to care after the damage is done. I wish I’d never met you! Look what loving you has done to me my family is destroyed!”
She clawed at my arms, her nails digging into my flesh. I felt warm blood seeping through my shirt sleeve but didn’t let go.
“Aria, please-
The door opened. Olivia stepped in.

“What’s going on?’ Her eyes widened, taking in the scene. “Aria, you need to calm down.”
‘There’s nothing left!’ Aria screamed.
Olivia approached us slowly. “Aria, your father wouldn’t want this. He’d want you to take care of yourself.
Something in Olivia’s tone reached Aria where I couldn’t. She stopped fighting, though tears still streamed down her face
Olivia turned to me. ‘Blake, Aria’s extremely emotional right now. You should leave.”
‘I’m not leaving her like this.”
She lowered her voice. “If you stay, she’ll only hurt herself more. Is that what you want?”
I hesitated, looking at Aria’s pale face, the dark circles under her eyes, the way her body trembled with exhaustion and grief.
“Fine.” I straightened my bloodied sleeve. “I’ll be outside if you need me.”
Aria didn’t respond. Didn’t even look at me.

I walked out, closing the door behind me. The moment it shut, I heard her break down, her sobs echoing through the door. Each cry felt like a knife to my chest. I stood there, leaning against the wall, feeling more helpless than I had in my entire life.
Jack rushed down the hallway toward me, his face anxious.
“Mr. Morgan, is Ms. Taylor awake?”
‘Yes.’ I didn’t elaborate.
His eyes widened at the sight of blood on my sleeve. The sounds of Aria’s anguished cries filled the hallway.
‘What happened to Aaron?” I asked, voice flat.
“According to the staff, he drowned in the lake inside the rehabilitation center. An unfortunate accident.”
I studied Jack’s face, ‘Are you certain it was an accident?”
He blinked, surprised. “What do you mean? Do you think someone… hurt Mr. Taylor?”
“If someone did, they won’t get away with it.”
“Who would want to harm him?”
