The man behind David stepped forward, and I froze. Alex? My lawyer Alex?

He was tall with wire-rimmed glasses that gave him a scholarly look. The kind of guy who belonged in law offices, not hotel rooms.

“Alex?’ I stared at him. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Before he could answer, another woman appeared from the bathroom-young, professional, carrying a laptop bag. She looked startled to

see us.

“Oh! Ms. Redwood,” she said quickly. “I’m Sarah Chen, Alex’s legal assistant. We’ve been working on a fraud case this morning.”

Alex nodded, looking relieved. “Sarah, these are my clients-well, Olivia is. And this is her friend Aria.”

I looked between them. “Your assistant is here too?”

“Of course, Alex said. “I never conduct client meetings alone, especially on sensitive cases. Sarah has been with me on every consultation

with Bella.

“I can show you my notes,” Sarah offered. “We’ve been documenting everything for court.”

Aria stepped forward. “And where were you when we arrived?”

“In the bathroom,” Sarah said, blushing. “I have IBS. The coffee this morning didn’t agree with me.”

Alex ran a hand through his wet hair. “Let me explain. This is my room-809. Bella came for her consultation at nine. Sarah arrived to take notes. We’ve been going over her fraud case for two hours.”

“Two hours?” I asked.

“It’s complicated,” Sarah confirmed. “Her ex created multiple shell companies to hide money. We needed to trace every transaction.”

Alex continued, “Twenty minutes ago, I went to pick up my coffee delivery. Then I accidentally spilled it. Spilled coffee all over both of

them.

David grimaced. “The coffee hit Bella worse than me. I just got my shirt soaked, but she was drenched. That’s why she had to shower.”

“And why you’re…” I gestured at his bare chest.

“Half-naked, yeah,” David said. “We called room service for replacement clothes. They should arrive any minute.”

“Bella’s been in the bathroom cleaning up, Alex explained. “Sarah and I continued working while we waited.”

Sarah nodded.

“So there are four people in this room, Aria said slowly.

“Exactly,” Alex said. “Legitimate legal business. Sarah maintains professional boundaries. Standard practice.”

I looked at Sarah. “You’ve been here the whole time?”

Since 9:15, she confirmed. “I can show you timestamps on my notes.

Bella wiped her eyes. “I was defrauded by my ex-boyfriend, Olivia. He took two hundred thousand from me. Alex is helping me get it

back.

She added. “I didn’t want to bring it up at work-it’s embarrassing. David only found out yesterday when he offered me a ride and I had

to explain where I was going.”

David put his hand on my shoulder. “I was just helping a relative going through a rough time. When she mentioned meeting her lawyer, 1

offered a ride. That’s all.”

Aria folded her arms, still looking skeptical. “That still doesn’t explain why you two looked so cozy in the lobby.”

Bella’s face flushed. “I was upset about having to relive the fraud story for two hours. Going through every detail of how my ex manipulated me, how he stole from me while pretending to love me-it’s exhausting. David was being kind when I started to get emotional in the lobby. That’s all.”

“She was crying and a little unsteady,” David said. “I held her arm to make sure she didn’t trip. Is that a crime?”

“It is when that someone is a married man and the woman is crying on his shoulder,” Aria shot back.

David’s face hardened. “Aria, with all due respect, you need to stop stirring up trouble in my marriage. Your own relationship isn’t exactly perfect-

‘Don’t,’ I warned him, squeezing his shoulder hard. “Don’t go there.”
