Chapter 246

The stairwell door burst open. A small figure in a pink dress darted across the rooftop garden, heading straight for us.
“Mommy! Mommy!”
Aurora crashed into my legs, wrapping her arms around me with surprising strength. I yanked my hand away from Blake’s, but too late.
Aurora had already seen.
“Why you holding Daddy’s hand?” she asked, staring up at us. “Your face all red, Mommy.”
I touched my cheeks. They burned under my fingers. “No it’s not.”
Blake grinned. “She caught what I have, sweetie. Makes people hot and their faces turn red when they stand too close.”
“Blake!” I snapped.
Aurora’s eyes went huge. “I gonna get it too?”
“No, honey,” I said, kneeling down. “Your daddy’s just talking nonsense. Where’s Grandma? How’d you get up here alone?”
“I runned super fast! Grandma was talking to doctor man. I wanted to find you.” She bounced up and down. “Can we see William? I made
him a picture!”
I smoothed her wild curls, trying to calm my racing heart. “Sure we can. Actually, I have huge news.”
Aurora gasped, slapping both hands against her cheeks. “What? Tell me now!”
I glanced at Blake, who nodded. “Let’s go tell everyone together.”
We headed downstairs, Aurora between us, grabbing our hands and demanding we swing her.
“Higher!” she commanded. “Swing me more higher!”
When we reached William’s room, everyone had gathered. Elaine sat reading to William. Richard stood by the window on his phone.
Aurora barreled in, waving paper. “William! Look what I made you!”
William smiled weakly, his face brightening. “Hey, troublemaker.
‘I not trouble! I a princess!” Aurora declared, climbing onto his bed.

“Careful with your brother, I warned, adjusting the IV lines around her.
Blake cleared his throat. “We have news.”
All eyes turned our way. My heart hammered against my ribs.
“We found a match, I announced. “Victoria’s bone marrow works with William’s. Surgery’s scheduled for next month.”
The room exploded. Elaine burst into tears. Richard dropped his phone mid-call.
“See? Told you somebody would help, Aurora said to William, patting his hand. “Now you can play with me again.”
William didn’t smile. His eyes locked on mine. “Victoria? That Victoria?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“What’s she want for it?” he asked.

The room went silent. My son shouldn’t have to think about adult schemes while fighting for his life. It broke something inside me.
“Don’t worry about that,” Blake said firmly. “Your mom and I are handling it.”
“She always wants stuff,” William insisted. “Always.”
“All you need to focus on is getting stronger,” I told him, squeezing his hand. “The doctors say you need to hit certain health marks before
surgery.
“I’ll try hard,” William promised, his jaw set with determination.
As everyone talked details, my phone buzzed. Rebecca’s message: “Emergency at Nouvelle. Victoria showed up demanding office and
assistant. Come quickly.”
Damn it. Of course Victoria wouldn’t wait. She wanted every advantage right now.
“Gotta go,” I whispered to Blake, showing him the message. “Victoria’s at Nouvelle.”
His jaw tightened. “Coming with you.”
“No,” I said. “Stay with William. One of us should be here.”
He hesitated, then nodded. “Call if you need backup.”

Chapter 246
When I arrived at Nouvelle, the receptionist practically collapsed with relief.
“Ms. Taylor, thank God. Ms. Morgan’s in the conference room with the executive team. She’s… making changes.
I stormed down the hallway, rage building with every step. Employees scattered, their faces showing confusion and worry.
I shoved open the conference doors. Victoria sat at the head of MY table, in MY chair. Rebecca stood beside her, tense and pale.
Department heads shifted uncomfortably around the table.
“What the hell you think you’re doing?” I demanded.
Victoria smiled slowly. “There she is. Woman of the hour. Just getting acquainted with my investment.”
“You don’t have any investment yet,” I snapped. “Nothing’s signed.”
“Just details,” she waved dismissively. “Since I’ll take an active role here, I need an office-the corner one on top floor-and a personal
assistant. She glanced at Rebecca. “I want this one.”
Rebecca’s eyes widened. “Ms. Taylor, I-
“Absolutely not, I cut in. “Rebecca’s my executive assistant. She’s not available.”
Victoria’s smile hardened. “Need I remind you your son’s life depends on my goodwill? I’m not asking much. Just decent office space and
competent help.”
I wanted to grab her by the throat. My hands actually shook from restraining myself.
