I headed upstairs to call William down for dinner. The house felt unusually quiet. Aurora played with her dolls in the living room,
humming to herself. Olivia had gone to pick up Ethan from his playdate.
“William? Dinner’s ready, sweetie,” I called, pushing open his bedroom door.
My heart stopped. William lay curled up in bed, face bright red, his tiny body shaking under the blanket. I rushed to his side and touched
his forehead. It burned against my palm.
“William? Baby, what’s wrong?” My voice broke with panic.
His eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused. “Mommy… I’m cold…”
Oh God. Not William. Not my baby.
“Blake!” I screamed, my voice echoing through the house. “Come up here! William’s sick!”
Footsteps thundered up the stairs. Blake appeared in the doorway, immediately taking in the situation.
“How long has he been this way?” Blake asked, already moving to pick William up.
“I don’t know. I just found him.” My hands shook as I grabbed William’s blanket. “We need to go to the hospital. Right now.”
The car sped through evening traffic, Blake’s knuckles white on the steering wheel. I sat in the back, holding William in my arms, Aurora beside us gripping her brother’s hand.
‘Mommy, Will’s gonna be okay, right?” Aurora’s eyes were wide with fear.
Before I could answer, warm blood started trickling from William’s nose. My stomach dropped.
*Blake, he’s bleeding!” I pressed a tissue to William’s nose, trying to sound calm. “Drive faster!”
William stirred in my arms, eyes opening slightly. “Mom… I didn’t hide it,” he whispered. “I just started feeling bad… couldn’t tell you in
time…
I swallowed hard, stroking his burning cheek. “Shh, baby, I know. This is just temporary. We’re almost at the hospital. You’ll feel better
soon.”
The words felt empty even as I said them. This wasn’t a simple fever. Deep down, I knew something was terribly wrong.

Mommy’s not worried, I forced a smile, willing my hands to stop shaking. ‘The doctors will make you better.
William’s lips curved slightly. “I’m not scared for me, Mom. Don’t be scared either.”
I held his small hand tighter. This time was different. We had the right medical team waiting. The best equipment. Everything would be
fine. It had to be.
Redwood Medical Center’s emergency entrance glowed bright in the night. Matthew stood waiting with nurses as Blake screeched to a
halt.

“How long has he been running a fever? Matthew asked, checking William’s vitals as nurses transferred him to a gurney.
“Less than an hour since we noticed,” Blake answered while I stood frozen, watching them wheel my son away.
“We’re taking him to the special treatment room,” Matthew explained, already moving. “Wait here. I’ll update you soon.”
I stood rooted in the hallway, staring at my dress. William’s blood had left small red stains across the fabric. My body felt cold, numb.
“Aria. Blake’s voice seemed distant. He wrapped his arms around me, covering my eyes with his palm. “Remember what William said. If he comes out healthy and sees his mom looking pale, he’ll worry.”
I nodded mechanically, fighting to pull myself together.
Olivia arrived minutes later, rushing from the elevator. She grabbed my hands immediately.
“William should be fine,” she reassured me. “This is probably just a regular episode. You caught it early.”
Aurora stood nearby, her eyes red from crying. When she noticed the blood on my dress, her small body began trembling.
“Will big brother be okay?” she whispered, voice breaking.
Ethan put his arm around her shoulders. “Will just has a small problem. The doctor uncles will fix him up.”
I tore off the bloodstained part of my dress, kneeling to kiss Aurora’s forehead. “You need to believe in your brother. He won’t give up
easily.”
“Your eyes are all puffy from crying, I added, trying to sound normal.
That earned a tiny smile from her.
