I got to the hospital early, carrying breakfast bags while pushing the door open. The room was quiet. Aurora slept with her teddy bear clutched in her hands. William hadn’t moved, eyes still closed.

I put the food on the table and checked on both kids. The doctor said William could go home today. I wanted everything ready when they

woke up.

“My mom still can’t open her heart to you.”

I turned around fast. William was watching me, fully awake.

“I heard mom talking with Aunt Olivia yesterday,” he continued, sitting up straighter.

My heart thumped hard. “William, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”

“Don’t change the subject,” he said, sounding older than his years. “Mom acts tough, but she’s hurting inside.”

I sat by his bed. “You’re right. Your mother has every reason not to trust me.”

“I know I hurt her, William. I hurt all of you. I can’t expect a few days of bringing breakfast and toys to fix everything.”

William studied me, then pushed himself up. “Mom says she doesn’t expect anything from you anymore, but her eyes tell a different

story.”

“What do you mean?”

“She still cares about you,” William stated. “But she’s scared you’ll hurt her again.”

I leaned closer. “What can I do, William? I want to make things right.”

William looked thoughtful, planning his words. “Mom needs to feel safe with you. She needs to know you won’t leave again when things get tough.”

“Why are you helping me?” I asked.

William shrugged. “Mom loves you. She won’t say it, but I can tell. He paused. “Also, I feel bad for trying to set her up with Dr. Matthew.”

I couldn’t stop my smile. “You did what?”

“He’s nice,” William defended. “And I thought mom needed someone to make her happy.”

Warmth filled my chest. I stood and hugged him. Thank you, son.”

William stiffened. I’m not saying I need a dad. I’ve been doing fine.”

I noticed his ears turning red. ‘Of course you have. You’ve been the man of the house, taking care of your mom and sister

“Right, William said, his voice shaky. “And don’t call yourself my dad yet. You haven’t earned that.”

The door opened before I could answer.

I pushed the hospital room door open and saw Blake sitting next to William’s bed. They both looked at me with startled faces, stopping

their conversation immediately.

“What are you two talking about?” I asked, walking into the room.

Blake stood up quickly. “I brought breakfast for everyone.” He pointed to several containers on the table.

I checked my watch. “Don’t you have work? It’s Monday morning.”

“I moved my meetings,” Blake said. “And I sent the quarterly bonuses to the project team early.”

“You didn’t need to do that,” I said, putting down my purse.

William looked between us, almost smiling. “Mom, the doctor says I can go home today.”

“Yes, that’s right,” I said, grateful for the subject change. “Dr. Hall says you’re getting better. You’ll need to come back for treatments, but you can rest at home now.”

“That’s great news, Blake said happily. “We can eat breakfast and then pack everything up.”

The word ‘we’ caught me off guard. Blake had been here every day since the children got sick, but I still wasn’t used to him acting like a

father.

“Sure,” I said. “There isn’t much to pack.”

Aurora moved in her bed, opening her eyes. ‘Mommy? Is that chocolate I smell?”

I smiled despite myself. “Blake brought breakfast, sweetie. And guess what? William gets to go home today.”

“Yay!” Aurora shouted, suddenly wide awake. She jumped up, running to hug her brother. “Will Will coming home!”

Blake watched them with a soft expression I hadn’t seen before. Something twisted inside me.
