I glanced at my sleeping children before stepping out. Leaving them with Blake felt wrong, but Jessica’s urgent call left me no choice.
An hour later, I walked into the conference room exhausted. Jessica rushed over with coffee and papers.
“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said. “I know the timing is terrible with William just getting better.”
I drank the coffee gratefully. “What couldn’t wait?”
“LY Technology wants to partner with us for their product launch.”
“LY Technology?” I knew the name – they were big in clean energy. “That’s unexpected.”
“They specifically requested you to handle their launch event. Their CEO insisted it must be you or they’ll go elsewhere.”
I frowned. “Me? Why? I’ve never met anyone from LY Technology.”
“Maybe because of the Scott family event? That got great press.”
Something felt off. “They won’t work with anyone else?”
“That’s what they said. This would be huge for us – their value has tripled this year.”
I sighed. “Maybe I’m just paranoid.”
“So you’ll do it?”
“Fine. Tell them I’ll meet once William is discharged.”
Jessica beamed, already reaching for her phone.
As I headed out, I thought about asking Blake if he knew LY Technology – his company was also in clean energy.
I caught myself. “What am I thinking? That’s over now.”
When I arrived at the hospital, I heard giggling coming from William’s room. Curious, I quietly pushed the door open.
Richard and Elaine were huddled by the doorway, Richard holding his phone up recording something.
“What are you two doing out here?” I asked, balancing a bag of food in my arms.

They both jumped. Richard quickly shoved his phone in his pocket. “Aria! You’re back!”
Why are you standing in the hallway instead of inside?” I peered past them into the room.
Before they could answer, Aurora spotted me and came running. “Mommy! You back! Come see!”
I walked in and stopped dead in my tracks. Blake, the powerful CEO, sat there covered in pink glitter makeup with a butterfly headband on his head. Stickers dotted his forehead, and his hospital gown was decorated with colorful clips and bows.
The sight was so unexpected I had to blink twice to make sure I wasn’t imagining it.
I barely recognized him. “Blake?”
William quickly closed whatever he was working on his tablet and tried to look innocent. Aurora tugged my hand, pulling me toward
Blake.
“This not Blake uncle anymore! This Aurora’s little sister! That means she your little sister too, Mommy!”
I stared at Blake, taking in his full appearance. His usually perfect hair was sticking out in odd directions under the headband. He had what appeared to be children’s lip gloss smeared not just on his lips but halfway up his cheek.
“I see,” I managed, fighting back a laugh. My heart did a weird flip seeing the powerful CEO sitting there decorated with children’s accessories. “And how did your… sister… end up looking so… creative?”
Aurora bounced proudly. “Aurora did it all! At home, Aurora only has Ethan’s teddy bears to make pretty, but now I have real sister!”
Blake sat there, looking completely mortified but making no attempt to remove the decorations. Our eyes met, and I saw a silent plea for
help in his gaze.
‘Aurora,” I said, setting down the food bag, ‘did Mr. Morgan agree to this makeover?”
“She said yes! But she not Mr. Morgan now. She my sister.” Aurora crossed her arms stubbornly.
Richard and Elaine had followed me in, and Richard was clearly struggling not to burst out laughing. Elaine nudged him with her elbow.
“I thought you two were going home to rest,’ I said to them.
“We did, but Elaine’s blood pressure went down so we came back, Richard explained, still eyeing Blake’s transformation with obvious amusement. “Didn’t want to miss anything… important.”
“Mommy brought cake!” Aurora suddenly exclaimed, digging through the bag I’d brought. She pulled out a container of chocolate cake, her eyes lighting up. “Sister needs cake too!”
I watched Aurora cut a small piece of cake with the plastic fork. “Aurora, I’m sure Blake can feed himself-
