Chapter 230

“That game had over a hundred million downloads when it launched in the US six months ago, I said, stunned.

“One hundred twelve million, actually, William corrected. ‘Europe did even better.”
I stared at my son, a mixture of pride and crushing regret washing over me. This brilliant child had accomplished so much while I was
absent from his life.
“William, you’re incredible,” I said, meaning every word. “I’m proud of what you’ve done.”
Something flickered in his eyes-surprise, maybe pleasure-before he masked it with indifference.
“Morgan Enterprises is launching a new green energy division,” I continued. “The technology might interest you. You could check out the labs, maybe add some ideas-
“Nah,” William cut in. “Any tech I want, I can make myself. Morgan stuff isn’t mine.”
The rejection hurt, but I understood. I’d been about to tell him that I’d already placed shares in a trust fund for him and Aurora when a wail erupted from the small sofa in the corner.
Aurora sat up, her face instantly covered in tears. “Waaaah!” she cried, her little body shaking.
I rushed over, panicking slightly. “Aurora! What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
William sighed from his bed. “She gets grumpy when she wakes up. Usually she sleeps it off, but I guess our talking woke her.”
“What should I do?” I asked, hesitating to touch her.
“Usually only Mom can fix it,” William said. ‘Maybe call her?”
I shook my head. “Your mother just left for an important meeting. I don’t want to bother her unless it’s an emergency.”
Making a quick decision, I gently picked Aurora up. “Hey there. Want to fly?”
Aurora’s crying paused momentarily as I lifted her above my head. Her tear-streaked face showed confusion, giving me a moment’s reprieve from the heartbreaking sobs.
I continued lifting her up and down, ignoring the throbbing pain in my injured left hand. After about fifteen minutes, sweat beaded on my forehead, but Aurora’s cries had subsided to occasional hiccups.
“Uncle?” she asked, blinking down at me. “Why only you here today?”

I lowered her carefully. “Your mommy had to go to work for a little while. I’m sorry if our talking woke you up.”
Aurora rubbed her eyes, looking around the room. ‘Where Mommy go?”
‘She’ll be back soon, I promised, setting her on her feet. “She had an important meeting.”
Aurora’s lip trembled again, but then she looked at me more closely. “Your head all wet. And your hand shaking.”
I hadn’t realized how obvious my discomfort was. The old wound in my left hand was throbbing from the exertion of holding her up.
“It’s nothing,” I assured her.
Aurora’s expression softened unexpectedly. “I not always cry,” she said. “It’s this hospital. I don’t sleep good here.”
“I understand,” I said, touched by her attempt to explain herself. “Hospitals can be scary places.”
She nodded. “And I miss Mommy when I wake up and she not here.”
“Your mommy is the most important person to you, isn’t she?” I said gently.
“Mommy is Aurora’s favorite,” she said. “My mommy is the bestest mommy in the whole wide world!”
“I believe that,” I said, meaning it. Watching Aria with our children showed me what an amazing mother she was. “I should have been
there to see it.”
Aurora looked at me seriously. “Uncle Blake, why you not here before?”
The question hit harder than any accusation. “Because I screwed up too many times and broke your mother’s heart, I admitted.
William made a small noise from his bed. I realized he was listening despite pretending to work on his tablet.
“Your mommy is amazing, I continued, speaking to both children. “And I should have been there to help her, to see you both grow up, That’s my biggest mistake.”
Aurora patted my hand. “It okay. Ev’rybody makes mistakes. Mommy says so.”
William cleared his throat. “Well, since you know you messed up, maybe you can do better now.”
It was a small olive branch, but it meant everything. “I really want to.”
