ARIA

“Aria!” Blake called out, reaching for me.

My legs gave way, but Blake caught me before I fell. I pushed him away, leaning against the wall instead.

“Don’t touch me,” I said, my voice raw from screaming.

A nurse approached with a chair, which I took reluctantly, never taking my eyes off the surgical wing doors where they’d taken William.

Blake stood a few feet away, his face haggard.

Olivia appeared beside me with a cup of water. “Here, drink this.”

I took small sips, my hands still stained with William’s blood. “How long has he been in there?”

“About thirty minutes.”

I looked down at my ruined wedding dress, now a canvas of red against white.

“Aurora?” I suddenly remembered my daughter.

“Kevin has her. She’s calmed down.” Olivia squeezed my hand. “Richard and Elaine are on their way.”

I noticed Blake watching me with desperate eyes.

“Can you tell him to wait somewhere else?” I asked Olivia. “I can’t look at him right now.”

Olivia nodded and spoke to Blake. He moved to the far corner, giving me space but unwilling to leave.

Time crawled by. The red light above the operating room doors seemed to mock us with its steady glow. Finally, it turned green. A surgeon emerged, pulling down his mask.

I jumped up. “How is he? Is William okay?”

“We’ve repaired the damage to your son’s shoulder. The knife missed major arteries, which was fortunate.”

Relief flooded through me. “Thank God.”

“However, he continued, “we noticed concerning abnormalities during surgery. His blood wasn’t clotting properly, and his platelet count is

extremely low.”

My stomach dropped. ‘What does that mean?”

“We ran some tests. His expression turned grave. “I’m sorry, but the results indicate acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The word hit me physically. Leukemia. My three-year-old had cancer.

‘That’s impossible,” I whispered. “He’s just a baby.”

“Unfortunately, ALL is most common in children between two and five.” The doctor’s voice softened. “The good news is that childhood ALL

has a high treatment success rate.

1 sank back into my chair, stunned.

“There must be some mistake,” Blake said, his voice breaking. “Run the tests again.”

“We did, twice,” the surgeon replied. “The results were conclusive.”

Memories flooded back-William’s nosebleeds, the bruises, his exhaustion.

“I found bloody tissues in his room,” I whispered. “He said his nose was bleeding. I thought it was normal.”

Leukemia. My baby had cancer.

“This is my fault, I choked out. “I need to see William. I have to-”

Everything went black. Strong arms caught me as I collapsed.

‘Get her to a room, now!” someone shouted.

“This makes no sense,’ I muttered, pacing the hallway outside William’s room. “Neither family has a history of blood disorders.”

Kevin stood nearby as I tried to process the shock of William’s diagnosis.

“There must be an explanation, I insisted. “Some environmental factor-

“Oh, there’s an explanation, Olivia’s voice cut through my thoughts. She stood in the doorway, fury radiating from her.

I turned to face her. “What do you mean?”

Olivia stepped closer, her voice low. “This is all because of Emma and her mother.”

“Emma? What does she have to do with William’s condition?*

“Everything!” Olivia hissed. “Three years ago, when Aria jumped off that cliff? It wasn’t just because of your betrayal.”

My blood ran cold. “What are you talking about?”

“Christine had been poisoning Aria for months.”

“That’s absurd,” I whispered.

“Is it?” Olivia’s eyes flashed. “Christine disguised toxins as fertility supplements. Told Aria they would help her get pregnant.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. “No…”

“By the time Aria discovered, the poison had already damaged her blood. When she got pregnant, it affected the twins too.”

My mind reeled. William’s leukemia. Aurora’s neurological issues. From poison?
