The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 63
Blitz walked with a slight limp. The moment he saw Elise, he started toward her, but Harold neither gave him permission nor loosened the leash.
Blitz had no choice but to sit. He tucked his tongue back into his mouth and stared at Elise and Chloe, almost as straight-backed and composed as Harold himself.
Chloe looked up at the man standing only a few feet away and sucked in a sharp breath.
“Is that Ha…”
She tried again, but somehow couldn’t get his name out.
Elise quickly tugged at her sleeve and whispered, “Go on. Say
hello to Mr. Nash.”
Chloe’s brain seemed to short-circuit.
“Go on. Say hello to Mr. Nash.”
Elise winced. “No! I mean you say hello to him.”
Harold glanced at Chloe, then at Elise.
Your friend has a good sense of humor.”

His expression gave nothing away.
Elise couldn’t tell whether he was joking or being sarcastic. She pressed her lips together awkwardly.
Harold led Blitz into the elevator.
The moment the doors closed, Chloe came back to life.
“Was that Harold Nash? From Firefly Glow? The Harold Nash whose family knows everyone who matters? The guy who could probably get a table anywhere in Los Angeles with one phone call?”
Elise blinked at the barrage of questions.
“I have no idea about the restaurant part, but yes. That was Harold Nash from Firefly Glow.”
Chloe immediately spun toward the elevator.
“Mr. Nash! Wait-”
Elise knew exactly what she was about to do.
She wrapped both arms around Chloe and dragged her back into the apartment with all her strength, then shut and locked the
door.

“Harold lives next door to you, and you never told me? A connection like that practically falls into your lap, and you just ignore it? Elise, that’s criminal.”
Elise calmly tied on her apron, took some vegetables out of the fridge, and started washing them.
“Chloe, you don’t understand. It took me almost ten days just to get a meeting with Harold. And outside of work, he won’t talk business at all.”
Everyone knew Harold was difficult to get close to, so Chloe understood what Elise meant.
Elise probably only knew him as well as she did because of work.
Then something clicked.
“Wait. That Cullinan downstairs is his, isn’t it?” Chloe stared at her. “Why is someone like Harold Nash living here?”
Elise knew Chloe wouldn’t let the subject drop.
Jane took the vegetables from Elise and started washing them.
Elise smiled at her before turning back to Chloe. “I’ll tell you, but you can’t tell anyone.”
Chloe nodded eagerly.

“He made a bet with someone. I think he lost.”
“What?” Chloe stared at her. “What kind of bet makes Harold Nash move into a place like this?”
Elise shook her head. “I don’t know.”
Chloe stole a slice of tomato from the cutting board and popped
it into her mouth.
After chewing for a moment, she said, “You don’t think it has something to do with you, do you?”
Elise gave her a flat look. “Why would it have anything to do with me?”
Well…
Chloe had no answer for that.
It just seemed like too much of a coincidence.
Harold Nash was notoriously hard to get anywhere near, yet somehow he had moved in next door not long after Elise did.
Jane listened with a smile as the two of them talked.
She couldn’t follow half of what they were saying, but she understood enough to know that Harold was successf ], well3:11

connected, and Elise’s boss.
An hour later, dinner was on the table.
Chloe stared at the spread. “Jane, this is way too much. The three of us couldn’t finish all of this in three meals.”
That reminded Jane of Harold.
He had gone out of his way to drive both her and Elise home, and she still hadn’t properly thanked him.
“Does he live alone?” she asked.
Elise nodded.
Jane immediately suggested inviting him over for dinner.
Part of it was simple gratitude. He had helped them twice that day.
And since he was Elise’s boss, Jane couldn’t help hoping he might look out for her a little at work.
