The Bride He Took for Granted

Chapter 62

“She’s my mother.”

Elise said it without hesitation, tightening her hold on Jane’s

arm.

One of the women quietly reminded Michelle, “Elise grew up in the country until she was ten.”

Michelle immediately apologized.

“I’m sorry, Elise.” She turned to Jane. “And I’m sorry, ma’am. I shouldn’t have assumed.”

After Elise and Jane walked away, another woman, covered in jewelry, looked at Michelle.

“Why did you apologize to them? Elise isn’t marrying into the Carter family anymore.”

“Maybe, maybe not,” Michelle said. “She still works at Landon’s company. If she really wanted nothing to do with him, wouldn’t she have quit by now? I’d rather not get on her bad side.”

Another woman nodded.

“She’s right. The Carter family has more influence than any of ours. Why else would Leonard be trying so hard to stay in13:10

“But Victor is strange too,” someone said. “There are plenty of women in Los Angeles who are more polished than Elise. Why is he so set on having Landon marry her?”

The store was fairly quiet that afternoon.

Michelle glanced around. Once she was sure no one was close enough to hear, she motioned for the others to lean in.

“I heard something from my father-in-law. Apparently, Sharon used to be a reporter…”

Parking at Maplewood Estates was a nightmare.

Chloe circled the complex twice and still couldn’t find a single

visitor spot.

It was her first time meeting Jane, and she had brought a pile of gifts. If she parked outside the complex and carried everything all the way to Elise’s apartment, her arms would be dead by the time she got there.

So when she spotted an empty space right across from the building, she decided manners could wait and pulled in.

Chloe could make friends with just about anyone. 2/7

The moment she stepped into Elise’s apartment, she dumped the gifts into Elise’s arms and beamed.

Then she spotted Jane.

“Jane!”

She opened her arms and hurried over to give her a warm hug.

Elise stood by the door with an armful of gifts, staring at them.

Why did it feel like they were the ones having a mother-daughter reunion?

Jane laughed. “You must be Chloe.”

Whenever Elise called Jane, Chloe somehow came up in the conversation sooner or later, usually because of something ridiculous she had done.

So even though this was their first time meeting, Jane already felt like she knew her.

And anyone Elise cared about this much was easy for Jane to like.

Chloe had been dying to try Jane’s spicy beef sauce.

Jane scooped up a spoonful and held her other hand underneath

Chloe had barely opened her mouth when her phone rang.

Her face fell.

“Hello? Who’s this?”

The man on the other end sounded even less pleased than she

was.

“Move your car.”

Then he hung up.

Chloe stared at her phone.

That voice was ridiculously deep.

For half a second, she found herself wondering what he looked like.

Then she remembered he had interrupted her spicy beef sauce.

Never mind. She was over it.

Chloe told Elise she was going downstairs to move her car to the side street.

Elise came out of the kitchen, taking off her apron. “I’ll come with you.”

Parking on the street meant parallel parking-and Chloe was

terrible at it.

Once, she had spent twenty minutes trying to squeeze into a space. She went back and forth so many times that at one point, her car was practically facing the wrong direction.

The driver waiting behind her had laughed so hard he could barely breathe.

Eventually, Chloe got out to inspect the space herself. Then she climbed back in, tried again, and finally got the car perfectly lined up.

Proud of herself, she went to hit the brake.

She hit the gas instead.

Crash.

The back of her car slammed straight into the front of the car

behind her.

The man stopped laughing, got out of his car, and demanded that Chloe pay for the damage.

Elise changed her shoes, and Chloe linked arms with her as they headed downstairs.

The all-black Rolls-Royce Cullinan was impossible to miss.

Even a couple of residents passing by slowed down to take a second look, and one of them pulled out a phone to snap a picture.

Chloe’s eyes widened the moment she saw it.

“Whoa. Who drives a car like that around here? And look at that plate-it has to be custom. Who is this guy?”

Elise recognized Harold’s car immediately.
