The Bride He Took For Granted novel Chapter 46

Chapter 46

By the time Landon finished dealing with the crisis, it was already dark.

Jerry filled him in on what had happened at Firefly Glow.

“Mr. Nash fired almost everyone involved in the incident in

Team One.”

Landon looked up. “Everyone?”

“Pretty much. He said they’d destroyed the trust within the

team.”

Landon thought Harold had taken things way too far.

Jerry continued, “The official notice singled out one employee in particular—a guy named Caleb. Firefly posted his name, employee badge, and ID number. After something like that, I doubt anyone’s going to hire him.”

Landon glanced over the notice Jerry handed him.

He frowned.

“Was he the one who messed with Elise’s…”

The word pad stuck in his throat.

He genuinely couldn’t understand how Elise, usually so reserved, had managed to say it in front of an entire office without flinching.

“Where is she now? And what did Harold say about the partnership?”

“The deal is still on. But Elise and the development team have to stay at Firefly Glow through the trial launch. Once the game goes live, they’ll monitor market feedback and make adjustments in real time.”

Landon was surprised—and pleased.

So giving Elise all that time to pursue Firefly Glow had been the right decision after all.

He had to admit, when it came to strategy and market instincts, Firefly Glow was operating on a completely different level from its competitors.

Just then, Joan called.

She told him she was stopping by the grocery store after work and wanted to cook him something he had definitely never tried before.

Landon’s interest was immediately piqued.

Within minutes, Elise had slipped from his mind.

******

Elise had assumed she would be able to leave Firefly Glow once the proposal was approved.

She hadn’t expected to stay through the trial launch.

Still, she could live with that.

At least she wouldn’t have to spend every day at Novatech Global seeing Landon.

Outside the building, Elise waited for her rideshare.

Her face was pale, her cramps hadn’t fully eased, and after everything that had happened, she was exhausted.

Several women nearby were waiting for their rides too. When they spotted her, one of them waved.

“Hey, Elise!”

Another woman looked over.

“That’s Elise? The one who stood up to those guys today? Why didn’t anyone tell me she was so young-and gorgeous?”

“Elise, you were amazing today.”

For the first time all day, something warm loosened in Elise’s

chest.

She smiled at them.

“Thank you.”

A moment later, her car arrived. Elise climbed in, still carrying the black bag with her wet clothes inside.

By the time she reached her apartment building, her stomach was still aching.

She walked slowly toward the entrance.

A black Maybach rolled past her.

Elise recognized it immediately. She had ridden in it several times before.

Harold’s car.

Maplewood Estates didn’t have an underground garage, and aboveground spaces were limited. Harold must have paid extra for the spot directly across from her building.

Since she had already seen him, it would feel rude to just walk off without waiting.

The cramps weren’t unbearable.

She could wait a minute.

The Maybach pulled into its spot.

Harold stepped out and closed the door.

As he did, his gaze flicked toward Elise.

That one look brought the whole afternoon rushing back.

Harold had been angry enough to fire nearly everyone involved in Team One. Elise had no idea how the team was supposed to function after that.

The thought made her feel a little awkward.

As Harold approached, he noticed that despite the polite smile on her face and her best effort to look composed, her cheeks and even the tips of her ears had turned pink.

He raised a brow, the faintest hint of amusement touching his lips.

erling guilty?”

Elise had the uncomfortable feeling that he’d seen straight through her.

She denied it immediately.

“No. Why would you think that, Mr. Nash?”

Harold gestured toward her hand.

“Then why are you digging your nails into your palm?”

Elise looked down.

Her right thumbnail had left several deep crescent-shaped marks in the hand gripping her bag.

She quickly released her grip.

“A mosquito bit me. It itches.”

Harold gave her a look that made it painfully obvious he didn’t believe a word of that, then headed toward the elevators.

Elise smoothed her hair and followed him.

Once they were inside, she glanced at him.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong today, but I did cause you a

lot of trouble at work. So… I’m sorry.”

Something flickered in Harold’s eyes.

After a brief silence, he said, “My employees were the ones at fault. Shouldn’t I be apologizing to you?”

“Huh?”

Elise meant it as a question.

Harold apparently took it as a yes.

“I’m sorry,” he said simply. Then, after a beat, “Though I have to admit, I didn’t know you had that in you.”

Did Harold Nash just apologize to me?
