The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 47
He glanced at the control panel.
“We didn’t press a floor. The elevator went into standby mode.”
Harold pressed the button for the sixth floor, and the lights immediately came back on.
He turned to Elise.
Her face had gone pale, her eyes still wide with fear. The sudden darkness had clearly scared her more than he’d expected.
Elise swallowed, her voice still shaky.
“At least it wasn’t broken…”
She was still a little shaken when she stepped out of the elevator.
Once inside her apartment, she turned on every light.
It took several minutes before she finally calmed down.
The next two days were the weekend.
Elise spent both days working at Firefly Glow, but they were the

most peaceful two days she’d had in a long time.
On next Monday morning, she arrived at Firefly Glow as usual.
The first-floor lobby was unusually crowded, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood.
Elise didn’t think much of it at first. Then two young women spotted her and hurried over.
“Elise! Come see this!”
“What is it?” Elise asked with a smile.
They pulled her toward the crowd.
The moment Elise saw what everyone was gathered around, she stopped short.
A square pink dispenser had appeared in the lobby.
A digital screen covered the left side, decorated with cheerful little icons and two lines of text:
[You don’t have to call me “that.” I have a name. I’m a pad.]
[When your period shows up, I’ve got you covered.]
Behind the spotless glass panel on the right were rows of 20:00

individually packaged pads.
Anyone who needed one could simply scan the code and take one for free.
Elise stared at the machine, momentarily speechless.
Then the women around her-and even quite a few of the men started chanting.
“Goddess! Goddess! Goddess!”
Elise didn’t know whether to laugh or hide.
Not far away, Joan walked through the lobby and stopped when she saw Elise surrounded by the crowd.
Her nails dug into her palms.
Around Landon, Elise was always so quiet and proper, playing the perfect well-bred lady.
Yet the moment she came to Firefly Glow, she had somehow turned herself into the center of attention.
Joan’s expression darkened.
Let’s see how long you can keep playing the perfect lady in front gf Landon after this.

She shot Elise a vicious look and walked away.
Seeing everyone who had come over to support her, Elise felt a warmth spread through her chest.
“Thank you, everyone,” she said. “And thank you to Firefly Glow for making this happen.”
She pulled out her phone with a smile.
“Anyone need one? I’ll get the first pack.”
She scanned the code, took out a pack of pads, then waved to everyone before heading toward the elevators.
As she slipped the pack into her bag, she looked up and saw Jason standing by the elevator doors, briefcase in hand, smiling
at her.
Jason was one of the developers of Echoes of Will.
Since the trial launch would require constant adjustments, he would be working at Firefly Glow for the next few days to coordinate with the team.
“Look at you,” he said. “Standing up for yourself.”
Elise was in a good mood, and her voice came out light.

“You’re not making fun of me, are you?”
“Not at all. You did great.”
Elise smiled.
So I wasn’t wrong.
Aside from Landon and a handful of people who clearly had it out for her, everyone else seemed to think she had done the right thing.
Once the elevator doors closed, it was just the two of them.
For some reason, the silence felt a little awkward.
Jason broke it first.
“Did the security cameras and smart lock arrive?”
Elise nodded. “They came on Friday.”
Her cramps had been bad that day, so she hadn’t reached out to him.
“I’m free after work today,” Jason said. “Want me to come by
and install them?”

“Sure. Thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“It’s no big deal. Just buy me dinner.”
Elise smiled.
“Deal.”
The elevator stopped at the marketing floor first, and Elise stepped out.
More than half the desks in Marketing Team One were empty.
Only four or five people had shown up for work.
Elise stopped by Emily’s desk first.
To thank her for lending her clothes, Elise had bought her a new skirt and a fresh pack of underwear.
When she returned to her own desk, she ran a hand over the chair before sitting down.
Only after making sure it was completely dry did she relax.
What Caleb had done had left her more wary than she wanted to admit.
As she waited for her computer to boot up, her thoughts drifted 1
