Eighty-Eight
The car door shut and the club music cut off mid-beat.
Neither of us said anything; the engine ticked under the hood and bass still rang in my ears. The smell of smoke clung to my hair.
The engine turned over and the seat hummed under me as Cameron pulled from the curb. Streetlights slid across his face. I folded into myself and watched the city smear past the glass.
Cameron’s hand came across the console and settled on my stomach. His palm covered the place where the baby was growing. I flinched and grabbed his wrist.
He pulled his hand back and cleared his throat. “Any dizziness? Nausea?”
“I’m pregnant. Not sick.” I looked at him. “Your concern feels like control.”
He turned onto a darker road where trees swallowed the streetlights. “I am responsible for your safety while you carry this child. If something happens, it affects more than you.”
I rubbed my thumb over my palm. “I know.”
He looked at me. “Then why fight me?”
Because I needed to feel like I still had a say over my own body.
“Because I’m not a piece of equipment you monitor.”
“I don’t see you that way,” he said.
The car slowed at a red light. The signal painted his face red. His gaze dropped to my mouth.
The space between us tightened.
The silence stopped feeling uncomfortable and turned heavy.
He reached across again and tucked my hair behind my ear. His hand stayed there.
I stopped breathing and watched his mouth.
“You’re smiling.”
“You’re staring.”
“I know.”
Neither of us pulled back.
His hand moved from my hair to my cheek. His thumb dragged over my skin. I leaned into it.
His chest rose harder.
He closed the distance first.
His mouth touched mine, careful. When I didn’t pull back, his hand came to my neck and he pulled me closer.
My grip tightened on his shirt.
I grabbed his shirt and he hauled me across the console. The console dug into my hip and the seatbelt cut across

my thigh, but neither of us moved back. The kiss turned rough and hungry.
My tongue met his and he groaned into my mouth. I caught his earlobe between my teeth and pressed against him.
“Lisa,”
” he said against my lips, pulling me closer.
“You’re mine.”
The words hit me and my brain stalled. The word should have pushed me away. It didn’t. His forehead rested against mine and our breaths tangled in the tight space.
We stayed like that.
He was close enough that his breath touched my lips.
His fingers tightened against my neck.
“Lisa.”
My stomach tightened when he said it.
He was about to say something that would change everything.
So I kissed him again before he could..
The second kiss went deeper. His hand gripped my waist and the seatbelt dug between us. He stopped moving.
The mansion lights appeared at the end of the drive. The house was bright and clean, nothing like the dark car. The mood between us broke.
We pulled apart while the car rolled. I tugged my shirt straight. Cameron tightened his hands on the wheel.
The car rolled to a stop near the entrance.
Before we opened our doors, the front entrance swung open.
Evangeline stepped out.
Her shoulders were tight as she came down the steps, eyes fixed on me.
Holy shit.
I stepped out of the car.
“So this is where you were. Out seducing him?”
My grip tightened on the door. “What?”
She ignored me and looked at Cameron instead. “You left without telling anyone. I was worried sick, and you were at a club with her?”
Cameron stepped in front of me. “I went to bring her home.”
“You didn’t need to go yourself,” Evangeline snapped. “Franklin could have done that. Unless you wanted an excuse to be alone with her.”
I pulled my jacket closed.

“That’s enough, Eva.” Cameron said.
She laughed; it sounded wrong. “Is it? Because it looks like you’ve already chosen.”
Her eyes flicked to me.
“She’s carrying your child, so she thinks she can take my place.”
“I don’t want your place.”
Evangeline’s expression twisted. “You already are.”
This wasn’t just messy; it could turn ugly. If this exploded, I would be the easiest person to destroy.
