In that moment, Rowan completely understood. The agonizing insults, the vicious labels slapped onto their child—the origin of all that trauma in her past life had been his family.
He was the one who had spoken those deeply cutting words. He was the one who had condemned their unborn child, allowing the Jameson family to humiliate her and push both her and their baby into the abyss.
For her, the vicious words of his family were far more agonizing than the judgment of strangers. That realization twisted like a knife in his chest.
After crying, Lyra turned around to pack her things and leave with the baby, but Rowan's hand clamped down on her wrist like a vice.
The man, who had been standing tall and freezing cold just a second ago, suddenly had his legs give out. He sank to the floor in front of her, collapsing onto the pristine hardwood, utterly defeated.
"W-What are you doing..." Lyra's pupils trembled. She panicked, the raging inferno of her anger instantly snuffing out as she instinctively tried to step back.
Rowan looked up at her, his voice hoarse. "I don't know what to do to make you stop hating me."
"I'll try anything."
"Anything that can pull you out of this pain, anything that makes it hurt less... I'll do it."
Panicking, her eyes reddened further. "Get up. Hurry, get up."
Rowan looked up with a bitter smile. "Why? Does it hurt to see me like this?"
"Lyra, torture me all you want. But I'm begging you, please stop torturing yourself. Stop burning yourself to the ground just to make me hurt."
"You won't feel happy. You won't get any thrill from revenge. It will only make you suffer more..."
Lyra didn't want outsiders to see the emotional wreckage of their confrontation, so she turned her back.
The door closed quickly, cutting off the noise outside. Rowan carefully carried a wailing Pip back into the room. Lyra took the baby from him and sat on the edge of the bed.
The realization that her baby's first storm was caused by his own unfit mother struck her.
Guilt drowned her like a tidal wave, and fresh tears poured uncontrollably down her face.
Rowan sat quietly beside her, reaching out to pull both mother and son into his broad embrace, his palm gently rubbing her trembling back.
His voice was raspy. "Lyra, as long as you can find a way to heal, I don't care if it kills me."
