"Once I'm dead, will any of this even matter?"
Waylon turned his head, his heavy gaze resting on her pale, haggard face. "Are the rumors true? Did Rowan lock you up, and are you pregnant with his child?"
Lyra pulled at the corners of her dry lips, pausing for a few seconds. The tragic, bloody memories of her past life surged in her mind, and her tone turned mocking. "I was pregnant with his child in my past life. I ended up collapsing in a pool of blood, in so much pain I nearly stopped breathing. Do you really think I'd ever have his child again?"
"Of course the rumors are fake."
But from those two or three seconds of silence, Waylon had already figured it out.
Lyra looked at Waylon beside her, a layer of desperation in her eyes. "You said you were reincarnated too. Can't you just help me? Why are you just standing by, watching a scumbag bully me? We're the only two reincarnators in this world—shouldn't we stick together and help each other? You're the only one who can help me now!"
Waylon thought to himself, We wouldn't be sticking together for warmth; we'd be digging our own graves together.
Lyra begged, "Please, just tell me who that college student is! I'll go find her. Won't you help me?"
Waylon lowered his eyes. How was he supposed to tell her that the college student was a complete lie he had made up on the spot?
He looked up and said flatly, "I'll be direct. If he actually liked you, would he ignore how much pain you're in? His affection for you is barely a drop in the bucket."
Lyra froze slightly. She hadn't come to him to hear whether Rowan liked her or not.
She came to figure out how to solve the nightmare that was Rowan.
Waylon continued, "If I were you, I'd just leave... Leave this place entirely."
A few moments later, Lyra opened the car door and stepped out of Waylon's car.
This time, Caleb actually looked quite pleased. "We have something to celebrate. Rowan didn't take that beating for nothing."
He looked at Lyra sympathetically. "Lyra, you've really had a hard time, and I feel for you. I told you, of all the people to provoke, why did you have to mess with him? He..."
"Enough," Delilah snapped, cutting Caleb off. She turned to Lyra, her tone softening slightly. "Sweetheart, since you used to have feelings for him, marrying him now isn't the end of the world. He donated eighty billion just for you, so he can't be all bad..."
Realizing her mother's stance had completely shifted, Lyra's face darkened. She shot back defiantly, "Mom! Stop being so old-fashioned! You can't force me to marry him just because of some baseless rumors. Yes, he locked me up for a while, but he didn't sleep with me—I slept with him!"
Delilah clutched her chest, nearly fainting from the sheer audacity of her daughter's words. "How can a young lady say such things out loud? You've thrown all your modesty out the window! What will people say about you?"
Caleb sighed. "Mom, let's focus on the main point. Grandpa Alistair's stance."
He turned to Lyra and cut straight to the chase. "Grandpa Alistair really approves of you. He fully supports your marriage to Rowan."
