"But I eventually saw his true colors. Rowan is entirely too cold-blooded and ruthless. Do you have any idea what happened to the Ford family?"
Before Lyra could even form a response, Delilah answered her own question. "They lost absolutely everything. The entire family was run out of town and forced back to Irving City."
Lyra actually knew the exact reason behind that, but she kept her mouth firmly shut.
She needed at least one person to stand unwaveringly in her corner.
"He's only treating you well right now because he wants you in his bed. Once the novelty wears off and he gets bored, what then? Are you going to end up exactly like Jasmine, tossed aside without a second thought?"
Lyra lowered her eyelashes, her voice deadpan. "I know, Mom. I'm not going to get tangled up with him again."
Delilah's eyes were swimming with anxiety. "Do you really know, Lyra?"
"If you don't wake up and see him for what he is, Jasmine's fate will be yours."
Hearing that finally made Lyra look up. Her gaze was flat. "Mom, do you actually know what kind of person Jasmine is? Why do you constantly defend her?"
Delilah froze, clearly stunned that her daughter was throwing the question back at her. She blurted out instinctively, "She's a woman abandoned by a man. Do you want to end up like that?"
"Mom, I am not getting back together with Rowan." Lyra lowered her eyes again, masking the storm of emotions swirling underneath. "But please, stop singing Jasmine's praises to me."
This immediately triggered Delilah's already fragile temper. "Look at you! Still making excuses for him! You've completely lost your sense of right and wrong."
Lyra didn't bother trying to explain anymore. "I haven't. Just get some rest, Mom..."
"If you're feeling up to it, we can check out later today. You'll sleep much better in your own bed."
...
At the Jameson Group.
Wesley watched with wide eyes as Andrea walked out holding a termination letter. "Didn't you confidently declare that you wouldn't get fired?"
As the Chief Secretary, Wesley stepped up to offer some obligatory comfort.
Zara sniffled, her voice thick with tears. "Mrs. Jameson just ordered me to break up with the Boss."
Wesley knew perfectly well their relationship was just a front. "Then break up. It's a fake relationship anyway."
Zara's head snapped up, a fresh layer of tears welling in her eyes. "I'm not breaking up with him."
"Huh?"
Zara bit her lip stubbornly. "I took millions of dollars from him. It's my job to help him handle his problems."
Wesley let out a heavy sigh. "Please stop."
"You just do exactly what he pays you to do. Stop acting like you're the star of a soap opera. The boss doesn't have a strict policy against throwing women out of the building."
