Lyra stared at Waylon. "Since you were given a second chance at life too, why didn't you tell me more?"
She hated how detached he looked. "Tell me exactly what else happened after I died."
Waylon pondered his options. What could he possibly say? That Rowan Jameson blew up a yacht to end his own life? That he forced his own brother to swallow poison despite his parents' desperate pleas? Or that Rowan had left every last cent of his sprawling empire to little Harry Fairchild?
Any of those truths would soften Lyra's heart. That didn't benefit him at all.
"What difference does it make?" Waylon asked.
He glanced at the drooling baby in Lyra's arms. That little infant would eventually grow up to be Seaborne City's wealthiest billionaire, the ultimate winner of it all. By the time Waylon had found out, it was far too late.
"Lyra, the only thing you need to focus on is staying as far away from Rowan as possible. He fell in love with someone else later." Waylon's tone was steady. "He fell for a college intern at his company. He locked her away. To keep her completely under his control, he held her grandmother hostage in a nursing home just to claim her body."
He paused. "Just like what he's doing to you now."
Lyra shivered, taking a long moment to process the sheer horror of it.
"Are you angry?" Waylon asked.
Lyra lowered her gaze and shook her head. "As long as it wasn't Jasmine Ford, I don't care who it was."
Waylon stared at her, his eyes dark, weighing the sincerity of her words.
"What about Jasmine?" Lyra didn't give a damn about the hypothetical college girl. She only cared about Jasmine's fate.
Before Waylon could answer, the steady rhythm of footsteps approached. Lyra immediately recognized Rowan's stride. Her face paled. "Stop... don't say another word. He's here."
"What are you two chatting about?" Rowan stopped in front of them, effortlessly taking the baby from Lyra's arms. His gaze dropped to her. "Are you tired? It's time for dinner. Let's head inside."
He threw a brief glance at Waylon. "Let's go."
Grandpa Alistair beamed, looking Lyra up and down. Her delicate features were radiant, and she seemed to glow under the chandelier's light. "It's been far too long. Little Lyra has truly grown into a stunning young woman," he said with immense pride.
He pulled out a thick envelope containing a generous trust fund check and offered it toward the baby. "I've already given the little girl her share. This one is for the boy."
"Thank you, Grandpa Alistair," Lyra said with a warm smile.
The newborn's tiny, weak hand merely brushed against the envelope before Kayla Harrington stepped in to accept it.
Caspian Jameson had just returned home. Spotting Lyra from the stairs, he called out, "Lyra!"
She looked up. "Cas."
Caspian hurried over and took the seat right beside her, his curious eyes darting to the bundle in her arms. "Is this Caleb's baby?"
He kept whispering questions about how everyone was doing, his face lit up with youthful vibrance.
