Thinking of the tiny, soft babies instantly brought a warm smile to Lyra's eyes. She nodded eagerly. "Cute doesn't even cover it. They're absolutely adorable."
"You have such a peaceful life. I'm so jealous," Yvonne sighed wistfully. "My family is just constant drama."
"You should bring them out sometime so we can meet them! I'll let you go for today. I need to give my grandpa the good news..."
Once Yvonne left, Lyra straightened her desk, opened her files, and buried herself in her work.
A few minutes later, Yvonne poked her head back through the door, looking at her with a hint of nostalgia. "I really never thought I'd see the day you'd be sitting at a desk like this. You've completely changed."
Surprised she was back, Lyra simply replied, "Everyone has to grow up eventually."
This time, Yvonne finally left for good.
Staring at the closed door, Lyra felt a flicker of melancholy as memories of her past life surfaced. She knew that Yvonne wouldn't escape her family's control; eventually, she would be married off to an heir from a prominent family, trapped in a loveless alliance.
...
Meanwhile, Andrea Nash walked briskly into the CEO's office, respectfully delivering the results of her recent investigations.
"Mr. Jameson, we have some answers. When the Fords first arrived in Seaborne City, Mrs. Ford deliberately sucked up to Mrs. Fairchild, Delilah Ward. The two of them were very close for a time, constantly socializing to the point where everyone assumed they were best friends."
"Because of their mothers, Lyra and Jasmine were close too. They had similar interests and got along perfectly. They were practically inseparable."
Andrea paused briefly before laying out the facts. "To put it into perspective, Lyra originally wanted Jasmine to marry Caleb. Caleb seemed interested in Jasmine, and a romance was brewing. But then Jasmine bumped into you, and she completely cut ties with the Fairchilds."
Rowan raised an eyebrow. "Caleb had feelings for Jasmine?"
Wesley's jaw practically hit the floor, his mind reeling.
Who would've thought? Lucas had always acted utterly repulsed by Lyra, never missing a chance to insult her or act like she was beneath him. Yet, behind the scenes, he had been secretly obsessing over her, plotting to make her his. He had hidden it incredibly well.
He instinctively glanced at Rowan. Sure enough, his boss's expression was laced with dark, venomous amusement.
Rowan had already suspected Lucas's stunt at the engagement party was fueled by his obsession with Lyra, but he hadn't dug deep enough to realize Lucas had done so much behind the scenes. "He actually had the nerve to go directly to Mrs. Fairchild..."
Even he felt a bit wary of Delilah Fairchild.
The sheer audacity of Lucas was staggering.
