The faint, metallic taste of blood instantly flooded her mouth, coating her tongue. She refused to let go, biting down with everything she had.
It was as if she were trying to channel all of her suffocating panic and profound fury into that single, desperate bite.
Rowan's body went momentarily rigid, but he made absolutely no move to push her away. He simply lowered his heavy gaze to look at her...
Their bodies were currently pressed intimately together, leaving no space between them.
...
Suddenly, someone knocked on the bathroom door. Lyra froze instantly, her blood turning to ice.
"Lyra, are you seriously showering again?"
Outside, Madeline turned to the other two girls and sighed in exasperation. "A bug landed on her earlier, and it spooked her so badly she's been scrubbing herself raw."
She stepped closer to the bathroom and raised her voice. "Lyra, we're heading downstairs first. Hurry up and come down when you're done!"
The only response was the soft click of the bedroom door pulling shut.
The room was instantly plunged back into silence.
Rowan reached over and shut off the showerhead and the running water.
He gathered Lyra's trembling, weak body into his arms and grabbed a towel to roughly dry her off.
Without a word of warning, he simply carried her out of the bathroom, walked right into the master bedroom, and dropped her onto the mattress...
Lyra's lips were stained with his blood, and her eyes were wide with sheer terror. Rowan, completely unfazed by the look he was all too used to, climbed onto the bed, hovering over her.
In his dreams, he had kissed her with a ravenous, desperate hunger.
Right now, Rowan felt like he was losing his mind. As he ran his hands down her slender, pale legs, he realized he had never felt such a twisted sense of euphoria in his entire life.
The movement pulled at the fresh wound on his shoulder, and a warm, sticky drop of blood fell directly onto Lyra's skin.
Lyra jolted violently, as if she had been branded by a searing iron. "I'm going to kill you."
"I swear to God, I will kill you!"
"Lyra... you can strangle me right now if you want."
The man's breathing grew increasingly ragged and heavy.
Madeline glanced up. "What's the deal with the car?"
"Got it towed to a shop. It shouldn't be a huge deal."
Then, Leo overheard the girls chattering about several hit shows, all of which Madeline proudly claimed she had invested in.
Leo laughed in amusement, leaning closer to Madeline. "Since when are you such a big shot? Playing the investment game now?"
Naturally, Madeline launched into a boastful speech about her own genius.
It only made Leo laugh harder.
They chatted aimlessly for another half hour. Seeing that Lyra still hadn't come downstairs, Leo finally frowned and headed up to look for her.
However, he came back down a few minutes later, his face completely grim. The girls were too glued to their phones to notice his expression. Leo dropped onto the sofa next to Madeline and muttered, "I definitely found the right person to ask for help."
Madeline barely looked up from her screen, not catching his words. "What are you mumbling about?"
Leo rubbed the back of his neck, but before he could say anything else, he stopped.
He spotted Jasmine making her way downstairs, her eyes scanning the room as if she were desperately looking for Rowan.
