She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 271

Rowan looked at her bare skin. His throat tightened imperceptibly, but he quickly looked away, his tone steady. "Caleb is drunk. I brought him back."

"Give him to me, I've got him."

Lyra quickly reached out to take Caleb. As she moved, her dress shifted slightly, her radiant skin catching the bright lights.

Rowan glanced at her slender arms and said quietly, "He's heavy. You can't hold him."

Just as Lyra wrapped an arm around Caleb, Rowan stepped in again.

The warm back of his hand accidentally brushed against her bare skin, and Lyra stiffened. Yet Rowan remained completely calm, acting as if the brief contact meant nothing. He supported Caleb firmly from the other side, half-carrying him straight to the living room sofa.

"Martha..."

"Martha!"

Right now, Lyra didn't care who it was, she just needed another living, breathing person in the room.

"Stop shouting, I'm leaving right now."

Rowan lowered Caleb onto the couch and looked up at her. "I have a girlfriend. What are you so afraid of? You can't stand being near me for a single second?"

Lyra hadn't expected him to be so blunt. A wave of awkwardness washed over her.

She didn't even know what she was afraid of.

Rowan hadn't actually done anything.

"Should we take him to his room?" she asked.

"No, no need. I'll walk you out."

Lyra grabbed a coat, buttoned it up, and walked Rowan to the door.

"I have a business trip tomorrow. Going to be busy," Rowan said with a faint smile as he stepped outside.

Lyra didn't respond.

She hadn't even been twenty back then, but she was already a stunning beauty, a campus queen. Yet, to escape her constant pursuit, Rowan had literally joined the special forces for a year, barely attended his local university, and fled abroad.

"The main reason he broke off the engagement with you was just because he didn't like you, right?" Caleb added.

Lyra froze.

She lowered her eyes, the lingering unease in her chest suddenly dissipating. "Maybe... I really am overthinking it," she whispered to herself.

"It's fine, girls should be careful," Caleb said. "You're grown up, protecting yourself is the most important thing. You're not wrong for being cautious. But—you can definitely rule Rowan out."

"Okay," Lyra said, a smile curving her lips. "Get up and grab some breakfast."

Lyra walked out to the living room just as her phone rang. It was Zane Sutton, calling to say he would be back in the country in a week.

Lyra was thrilled. "Where do you want to stay in Seaborne City? I'll find you an apartment."

"No need," Zane replied. "My cousin found me a place."
