After taking a shower, Lyra checked herself over one last time. Finding no other suspicious marks, she finally let out a breath of relief.
"Rot in hell, Rowan."
She cursed his name a few more times into her pillow before finally drifting off to sleep.
Early the next morning.
Caleb had already left for the office. Delilah insisted Lyra stay home to rest, so she was taking her time eating breakfast in the dining room.
Mr. Lawrence hurried in to announce that Rowan's car was waiting outside.
The bite of food Lyra had just swallowed nearly made her choke, splashing into her soup bowl.
Kayla instantly tensed, grabbing Lyra's hand. "He's not here to kidnap you again, is he?"
Lyra had no idea why he was there and felt a knot form in her stomach, but she offered Kayla a reassuring smile. "It's fine. I'll just go tell him off."
With that, she stood up and headed for the door.
Kayla wasn't convinced and tried to follow, but Martha gently held her back, signaling that Mr. Lawrence would accompany her instead.
With her pregnancy so far along, she couldn't risk any undue stress.
Outside the gates, Rowan's luxury sedan sat idling. As Lyra approached, the rear window rolled down halfway. His dark, brooding gaze locked onto her before he spoke.
"I came today to say that the past is entirely behind us. We're even."
"That's it?" Lyra frowned. Driving all the way over just to deliver a single sentence didn't seem like him at all.
Through the half-open window, Rowan's eyes drifted down to her lips.
"What else were you expecting?" he asked.
Lyra scowled. "I should be asking you that. We're both busy people. A phone call would have sufficed. There was no need for you to come here in person."
Rowan replied smoothly, "Do I have your number? I seem to recall being blocked."
"Boss."
Wesley found himself agreeing with Lyra for once—this trip really had been completely unnecessary. "Shall we head to the office?"
Rowan stared fixedly at the closed gates for a long moment before slowly retracting his gaze.
"To the office."
……
Jonathan Ford had been in custody for two days now. Tabitha sat at the head of the table, looking pale and haggard, her makeup a tear-streaked mess.
"How could this happen... they just took him away without warning..."
Thomas paced back and forth nearby. "As long as Rowan is willing to help, there's still a chance to turn this around! A single word from him carries more weight than anything!"
Grandma Ford chimed in, "Jasmine, it's time you speak to Rowan... You're going to be his wife. Beg him to step in and save your father! Jonathan isn't just your dad; he'll soon be his father-in-law. Even if you don't ask, he should already be doing something."
