"Breakfast is almost ready. Go put the plates on the table," Hulda said, forcing a cheerful tone.
Sienna was officially an adult now; she knew how to read the room. Recognizing that Hulda was actively changing the subject, she smiled and nodded, grabbing the bowls and heading out.
Just as she set the table, Hulda's phone started buzzing.
"Hulda, your phone's ringing!" Sienna grabbed the device and pressed the answer button, holding it out to her.
Not knowing who it was, Hulda casually took it. "Hello? Who is this?"
"Who is this?" Herbert's freezing voice replied.
Right now, Herbert was the absolute last person Hulda wanted to hear from.
She vividly remembered the night before. In her moment of absolute terror, her legally wedded husband had coldly hung up on her, leaving her to die.
"What do you want?" Her tone dropped to sub-zero temperatures.
At this point, there was truly nothing left to say. She was merely waiting for the divorce papers to finalize so she could sever ties with him forever.
Back in the hospital, Herbert's chest tightened at her distant, hostile tone. Suppressing his irritation, he forced himself to explain. "Hulda, the building had a sudden blackout last night. Sylvie was locked in the lab. It was a massive emergency. I had to go."
Hulda no longer cared whether Sylvie was more important to the company or to him. None of it mattered.
"Okay. I know," she replied flatly. "Is there anything else?"
Her absolute apathy struck a nerve. He couldn't hold back his temper. "Hulda, I just explained everything to you. Why are you still acting like this?"
She calmly turned off the stove and leaned back against the counter. "How exactly should I act?"
