Before retiring, Valery had been the vice dean of a prestigious national arts academy and a renowned musician in her own right. Having spent decades rubbing shoulders with the arts elite, her every word and action was practically drenched in elegance. To maintain her flawless public persona, she rarely raised her voice or lost her temper.

The only exception to that rule was her daughter.

Startled by the sheer venom in her mother's expression, Cora shrank back. "Mom, keep your voice down. You'll scare Miles."

Remembering her grandson was still nearby, Valery immediately looked over. The boy merely tilted his head at them, entirely unfazed. Relieved, she offered a tight smile. "It's nothing, Miles. Grandma and Aunt Cora are just having a chat. Keep reading."

"Keep it down, Grandma, Aunt Cora," the boy grumbled with a tiny frown before burying his nose back in his book.

Her face cold, Valery pulled Cora a bit further away. "This is my final warning. Never mention that incident again! Especially not in front of your father or your brother! The Jewells are a family of scholars with a deep, respectable legacy. I will not tolerate anything that damages this family's reputation. Do you understand me?!"

Cora hung her head, knowing she had slipped up. She nodded meekly. "I know. I was just so mad at Hulda today that I spoke without thinking. I won't do it again. Please don't be mad."

Seeing her daughter looking so pitiful, Valery's heart inevitably softened. "Why can't you just be as out of trouble as your brother?" She paused, sighing. "I think it's time we find you a husband. Once you're married and have responsibilities, you'll finally grow up."

At the mere mention of marriage, a faint blush crept onto Cora's perfectly made-up face.

Valery was still mentally scrolling through the list of eligible bachelors from their social circle when she noticed the flush. "Don't even think about it. Justin Jameson is not a match for you."

Cora's face instantly fell. "Why not?! I like him! I've liked him since we were kids! Why aren't we a match?"
