Ignoring Sylvie completely, Hulda walked around the desk, knelt down, and began sorting through the pile of her discarded belongings, tossing the few items she still needed into her bag.

Watching her, Sylvie's face twitched with discomfort. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Jewell. Mr. Jewell told me I could use this study. I had so many things, so I just moved yours out of the way temporarily. I promise I was going to organize them for you, I just—"

"Don't bother. I don't need any of this anymore. Everything left in here is yours. Do whatever you want with it." Her voice was terrifyingly calm, completely devoid of emotion. She was simply stating a fact.

She truly didn't want any of it. The study, the house, the people—she was done with all of it.

But Sylvie clearly misinterpreted her deadpan delivery. Her eyes instantly welled with tears as she hurried around the desk to stand beside her. "Please don't be angry."

"I'm not angry," she replied. She was just exhausted.

"I know you're just saying that because you're mad. I apologize, it's all my fault. You know that fake wedding ruined my reputation back home. My roommate is from my hometown, and I just couldn't bear to live with her anymore. That's why I had to move out. I couldn't find a place in time, and Mr. Jewell felt sorry for me, so he let me crash here temporarily... I promise I'll leave..."

Hulda looked up at the girl, who looked like she was a second away from dropping to her knees and begging. "Save it. Herbert isn't here, and there are no security cameras. You don't need to put on a show."
